A big hello from the team at Compuco!
At Compuco we empower socially responsible organisations with the digital tools they need to build a better world.
As a data driven creative technology agency, we are passionate about helping membership, charitable and cultural organisations to streamline and reimagine the way they work so that they can focus on impact.
We are looking for an experienced PHP engineer to build and maintain CiviCRM extensions and Drupal modules for not-for-profit clients. You will use AI coding tools every day and care about testing.
Compuco is split into product teams. As a key member of one of these teams, you'll be involved in the entire development process, from the specification phase through to release. Your main focus will be building new functionality as CiviCRM extensions and Drupal modules (Drupal 7 and Drupal 10/11), around finances, payments, memberships and case management. We use AI coding tools every day and have shared playbooks for how to use them. We expect you to use them to work faster, and to check what they produce before it reaches a reviewer.
We’re a very process-driven team and constantly seek to refine the way we work to ensure that we continue to deliver the highest quality service to our clients and to the sector as a whole. We’re looking for someone with a “can do” attitude to join our growing team.
As a distributed company with an HQ in London and team members from all around the world, one of the things that makes working at Compuco special is the chance to meet, mix and learn from people from an amazing array of nationalities and cultures. We’re extremely proud of the way we work and the open culture we’ve developed.
Key responsibilities:
Build and test CiviCRM extensions and Drupal modules, with unit tests on every change
Help write technical specifications before building, and at a senior level lead them
Review other people's pull requests and give useful technical feedback
Use AI coding tools within our playbooks, and check their output
Investigate production issues to the root cause and write up what you found
Take part in planning, estimation and retrospectives, and follow actions through
Keep documentation up to date: README files, extension metadata, process pages
Share knowledge with and support other members of the team
Experience sought:
At least 3 years of experience in web application development with PHP. For the senior end of the range, we look for 5+ years, including time as a senior or lead.
Experience extending a large PHP platform through its hooks, APIs and modules or plugins (Drupal, WordPress, SuiteCRM, Magento or similar). CiviCRM experience is a bonus
Daily use of AI coding tools (Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, Cursor or similar) on real projects, and the judgement to spot when their output is wrong
Experience writing unit tests and testing processes
Excellent database / SQL skills, including performance optimisation and normalisation
Be skilled with Git, including rebasing and squashing commits
Experience with Docker-based local development environments
Experience with Linux and the command line
Experience with CI/CD pipelines, ideally GitHub Actions
Desirable skills:
Writing technical specifications that others can review and estimate
CiviCRM extension development
Browser testing with Playwright or similar
Payment processor integrations and webhooks (Stripe, GoCardless or similar)
Drupal module development on 7 and 10/11
Front-end JavaScript, including legacy AngularJS
Security and data protection awareness
Contributing fixes to open-source projects
What we value in this role:
Good judgement: knowing when the quick answer is the wrong answer, whether it comes from an AI tool or a person
Following through: a job is done when the fix is merged and the ticket is closed
Clear writing: specifications, PR descriptions and investigation notes that others can act on
Team player: reviews, mentors and shares by default
Type: Permanent
Location: Hybrid working (office based in Shoreditch, London) or Fully Remote anywhere in the world
How to apply:
If you think this is the role for you, please send your CV through to us with a short covering statement explaining what caught your interest and why you think you'll fit.
Salary range: £25k-£35k
