Divergent Technologies is a Torrance, California manufacturer that has built an end-to-end digital production system for complex vehicle and aerospace structures, combining generative design software, metal additive manufacturing and robotic assembly without fixtures. Its Divergent Adaptive Production System produces chassis and structural parts for automotive customers and increasingly for defense and aerospace programs, and its founders also created the sister hypercar maker Czinger Vehicles. Current openings span C++ and robotics software engineering, machine control, supply chain management and business development for Air Force and other defense programs.

Divergent is building the new industrial age. Every day, our teams design, manufacture, and assemble advanced systems for some of the world’s most demanding industries. Our integrated engineering and manufacturing platform transforms complex designs into production-ready solutions, helping customers move faster, build smarter, and deliver critical systems when they matter most. Divergent is a qualified Tier 1 supplier to global automotive OEMs and supports leading U.S. aerospace and defense companies.

Join us and help push the boundaries of what can be built.

Purpose

Divergent is transforming how complex products are designed and manufactured through a fully digital production system that combines advanced software, industrial robotics, and large-scale metal additive manufacturing. We are seeking a Staff Robotics Software Engineer to design, develop, and optimize the robotics and machine-control software that powers our automated manufacturing platform. This role is intended for a highly experienced engineer who thrives on solving complex technical challenges, building robust software systems, and working at the intersection of robotics, automation, and advanced manufacturing. You will be a hands-on technical expert responsible for architecting and implementing software that controls robotic systems, manufacturing equipment, and automated production processes. Your work will directly impact factory performance, machine reliability, production throughput, and the evolution of Divergent's next-generation manufacturing technologies.

The Role

Robotics Software Development

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain software that controls robotic systems, automated manufacturing equipment, and production workflows.
  • Build reliable and scalable software solutions for industrial robotics, motion-control systems, sensors, machine vision systems, and factory automation infrastructure.
  • Develop applications that coordinate complex interactions between robots, manufacturing equipment, and production systems.
  • Implement software that enables high-performance, repeatable, and highly automated manufacturing processes.
  • Optimize software performance, reliability, maintainability, and system throughput.

Machine Control & Automation

  • Develop machine-control software for additive manufacturing systems, robotic cells, and production equipment.
  • Design software architectures that support real-time decision-making and coordinated robotic operations.
  • Integrate hardware, sensors, actuators, and automation systems into production-ready software solutions.
  • Investigate and resolve complex software, integration, and system-level issues in manufacturing environments.
  • Support deployment and commissioning of new manufacturing technologies and automation systems.

System Architecture & Technical Problem Solving

  • Architect robust software solutions for highly automated production environments.
  • Evaluate tradeoffs between performance, scalability, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Contribute to technical design reviews and software architecture discussions.
  • Identify opportunities to improve factory automation capabilities through software innovation.
  • Develop tools, frameworks, and infrastructure that improve engineering efficiency and system performance.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner closely with Robotics, Manufacturing, Controls, Mechanical, Electrical, and Product Engineering teams.
  • Translate manufacturing and automation requirements into scalable software solutions.
  • Collaborate on system integration efforts involving robotics, controls, sensors, and production equipment.
  • Support root-cause analysis and resolution of complex operational and production issues.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, with significant experience developing robotics, automation, industrial systems, or machine-control software.
  • Strong proficiency in C++, C#, Python, or similar programming languages.
  • Experience developing software that interfaces directly with hardware, robotics systems, industrial equipment, or automated machinery.
  • Experience designing and implementing complex software systems deployed in production environments.
  • Strong debugging, troubleshooting, and systems-thinking skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Controls Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience with industrial robotics platforms such as ABB, FANUC, KUKA, or Yaskawa.
  • Experience with motion control, machine vision, path planning, automation systems, or robotic work cells.
  • Experience with real-time software systems and distributed control architectures.
  • Experience in advanced manufacturing, additive manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, defense, or industrial automation environments.
