About the Team and Role
The eBay Cloud team powers the foundational cloud infrastructure that supports thousands of eBay applications. As one of the largest private cloud platforms in the industry, we operate and manage hundreds of Kubernetes clusters across diverse environments, comprising millions of compute instances.
The Traffic team is critical to the availability and performance of eBay's private cloud. Our responsibilities encompass the end-to-end management of all cloud traffic infrastructure, including load balancing, global traffic management (GTM), Point of Presence (PoP), service mesh, API gateways, and advanced network policies. We design, deploy, and operate high-performance, fault-tolerant traffic routing solutions that handle billions of daily requests, ensuring seamless, low-latency connectivity for both internal microservices and external customer traffic. This involves continuous optimization of data plane performance, rigorous security enforcement at the edge and within the cluster, and developing self-service tools that empower application teams to configure their connectivity reliably and securely across our massive global footprint.
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Cloud Traffic Engineering Manager to lead a team responsible for the development, operations, and governance of one of the largest private clouds in the world based on Kubernetes.
You will guide and mentor a team of hardworking engineers in building and maintaining robust, secure, and scalable cloud offerings that empower eBay’s core product engineering organizations and initiatives.
We require a unique blend of cloud expertise, traffic management, software development management experience, and strong leadership skills. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of cloud-native technologies, experience managing and developing software engineering teams, passion for building scalable and reliable systems, and excellent people skills to cultivate a high-performing team.
What you will accomplish:
Leadership & People Management
Lead and mentor a team of cloud engineers, fostering a strong culture of collaboration and continuous improvement.
Conduct regular one-on-one meetings with team members, providing guidance, feedback, and support for their career development.
Manage performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback and actively participate in all phases of growing the engineering organization through recruiting, team
building, etc.
Cloud Engineering, Operations & Governance:
Lead and coordinate engineering activities to successfully plan, communicate, and deliver on product features on time while designing for quality, observability, and
scalability.
Ensure full software lifecycle instrumentation from requirement ideation to software development to deployment.
Drive the adoption of cloud-native technologies and standard processes, such as service mesh, microservices, etc.
Collaboration with internal partners and team members:
Cloud engineering and operations teams, product, and PMO on engineering resource allocation and project schedules in accordance with our strategic organizational priorities.
Cloud SRE team to champion automation to enhance efficiency and reliability.
Operations teams on maintaining a highly available cloud infrastructure to ensure eBay’s products and services are available to our customers.
Fleet management team passionate about managing resources, coordinating workloads, and controlling costs for the private cloud.
Information security teams to ensure integrity and compliance of the cloud infrastructure by implementing appropriate security controls and monitoring.
Global security teams to ensure the products are protected against external and internal threats
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
10+ years of software engineering experience, including 3+ years of people management or technical leadership.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to bridge technical and design perspectives.
Strong technical background with a deep understanding of cloud-native architecturesand technologies (e.g., Kubernetes, containerization, service mesh, microservices).
Experience with software development, networking, and security technologies in a large-scale cloud environment.
Experience working in large, distributed global teams and supporting medium or large-scale technology organizations with multiple internal partners.
Nice-to-Have Skills
Direct experience with customizing and maintaining Linux operating system kernelsfor large-scale, high-performance computing platforms.
Experience in forecasting resource needs, distributing resources efficiently, and reducing costs for large private cloud infrastructure.
Knowledge of software development, networking, security, and storage technologies in a cloud environment and proven understanding of cloud-native architectures, microservices,
DevOps and SRE principles.
Deep expertise in implementing and championing automationto enhance efficiency and reliability.
Professional certifications related to Kubernetes (e.g., CKA, CKS) or cloud infrastructure.
Proven ability to work closely with Information Security teams on compliance, security controls, and monitoring for cloud infrastructure.
Understanding of developer experience (DX) principles for platforms that use application programming interfaces.
Strong product attitude - balancing security rigor with customer empathy and usability.
