Import Controller / Freight Controller

Introduction

We are seeking an experienced Import Controller / Freight Controller for a leading freight and logistics company based in Observatory, Cape Town. The ideal candidate has a solid understanding of import shipments, communicates well with clients and service providers, and can manage shipments from start to delivery.

Job Description

You will coordinate import shipments, monitor their progress, maintain accurate documentation and keep clients informed throughout the process. This role suits someone who is organised, detail oriented and comfortable working to tight deadlines.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Manage import shipments from booking through to final delivery.
• Liaise with clients, overseas agents, shipping lines, airlines, clearing agents and transport providers.
• Track shipments and provide clients with timely status updates.
• Check shipping documents for accuracy and completeness.
• Coordinate customs clearance and delivery arrangements.
• Identify and resolve shipment delays, documentation queries and other operational issues.
• Maintain accurate shipment records and update internal systems.
• Ensure shipments are handled in line with client requirements and company procedures.

Desired Experience & Qualification

Qualifications

• Matric is essential.
• A qualification in freight forwarding, logistics or supply chain management will be advantageous.

Experience and Skills

• 3–5 years’ experience in import or freight controlling.
• Experience coordinating shipments and working with shipping documentation.
• Good knowledge of import processes and customs clearance procedures.
• Strong communication, organisation and problem solving skills.
• Ability to manage multiple shipments and meet deadlines.
• Confident computer skills and experience using freight management systems.
