Construction Safety Officer

LOCATION: Vancouver and Lower Mainland, BC

As we continue to grow, we’re looking for a Construction Safety Officer to support our safety inspection services.

The Construction Safety Officer will conduct site safety inspections and support the effective implementation of occupational health and safety requirements on municipal construction and operational sites. The successful candidate will identify hazards, document findings, communicate corrective actions, and help ensure that site activities comply with WorkSafeBC regulations, Client requirements, project-specific safety plans, and recognized industry practices.

Responsibilities:

This work requires close collaboration with Client representatives, contractors, supervisors, workers, and Maven’s safety and inspection team, and reports to Maven’s Quality & Inspections Supervisor. The core responsibilities include:

• Conduct scheduled and as-needed inspections at municipal construction and operational sites, including utility, sewer, pumping station, landfill, transfer station, roadway, and public-facing work areas.
• Assess site conditions and work practices for compliance with WorkSafeBC requirements, Client standards, contractor safety plans, safe work procedures, and project-specific requirements.
• Inspect and document controls related to excavations, confined spaces, traffic management, fall protection, scaffolding, rigging, lockout, electrical hazards, cranes and hoists, tools and equipment, fencing, lighting, guardrails, first aid, and emergency response.
• Review site orientations, tailgate and toolbox meeting records, hazard assessments, permits, training documentation, and other due-diligence records.
• Identify unsafe conditions or practices, communicate findings promptly, and work collaboratively with Client representatives and contractors to confirm appropriate corrective actions.
• Prepare clear, accurate, and timely inspection reports using Client templates, supported by photographs and objective field observations.
• Track findings and corrective actions, follow up on outstanding items, and escalate significant or recurring concerns to the appropriate Client and Maven contacts.
• Support incident and near-miss reporting, investigations, documentation, and corrective-action follow-up when requested.
• Maintain organized records of site activities, inspection results, person-hours, meetings, incidents, and risk assessments.
• Complete training in additional inspection disciplines required by the power utility Client and apply that training to perform civil construction inspections.
• Participate in onboarding, field shadowing, quality reviews, safety meetings, and continuing professional development to maintain consistent and high-quality service.

Requirements

What we are looking for:

• Completion of a recognized Construction Safety Officer training program.
• Eligibility for, or current certification as, a Construction Safety Officer through ASTTBC or an equivalent recognized organization.
• Post-secondary education or additional training in occupational health and safety, construction, civil technology, or a related discipline is an asset.
• Experience conducting safety inspections on construction, municipal infrastructure, civil works, utilities, or operational sites.
• Working knowledge of the Workers Compensation Act, WorkSafeBC Occupational Health and Safety Regulation, Vancouver Building By-law, applicable fire-code requirements, and construction safety practices.
• Familiarity with municipal infrastructure activities such as excavation, traffic control, confined-space work, utility construction, pumping stations, sewer systems, landfill operations, and work near the public is an asset.
• Strong hazard-recognition, report-writing, documentation, and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently in the field while maintaining professional, collaborative relationships with clients, contractors, supervisors, and workers.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and electronic reporting or document-management systems.
• Valid Class 5 driver’s licence and the ability to travel to project sites throughout Vancouver and the Lower Mainland.

• Ability to work occasional early mornings, evenings, nights, or weekends based on active construction schedules.

• Current first aid, WHMIS, confined-space, fall-protection, traffic-control, or related construction safety training is an asset.

Compensation:

Individual compensation packages are based on factors unique to each candidate, including skillset, experience, qualifications, and other job-related considerations. The salary range for this role is $35 to $55 per hour.
