Scientific Software Engineer (Weather Warning Verification) (professione segnalata)

Mansioni:

Scientific Software Engineer (Meteorological Alert Verification) (identified role)

Responsibilities:

  • Improve and expand operational products for the verification of rainfall alerts.
  • Further develop and operationalize the verification system for wind alerts, transitioning from the current station-based approach to a grid-based one.

In a subsequent phase, depending on team priorities and progress, your work will include tasks such as:

  • Integrating an existing tool for the verification of *nowcasting* (very short-term forecasting) alerts into our operational system, harmonizing approaches and consolidating code where appropriate.
  • Developing verification systems for snow and heat alerts and, provided their quality is sufficient, implementing them operationally.
  • This is a fixed-term position with a duration of three years. Your Profile
  • We welcome applications from diverse backgrounds, provided candidates meet most (though not necessarily all) of the following:

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree (MSc) or PhD in Computer Science, Data Science, Natural Sciences (e.g., Physics, Atmospheric or Environmental Sciences), or a related field

  • Solid proficiency in Python, ideally with experience handling meteorological data (both point-based and gridded) and familiarity with industry-specific formats and frameworks (e.g., Polars, Xarray, Earthkit, GRIB, netCDF)
  • A sound understanding of meteorology, with a particular interest in high-impact weather phenomena and weather warning systems
  • Familiarity with forecast verification methods and statistical evaluation
  • Willingness to contribute to the entire workflow—from translating scientific methods into operational products to their ongoing maintenance
  • A collaborative mindset, a strong sense of personal responsibility, and the ability to communicate effectively within a team
  • Enthusiasm for working closely with operational meteorologists and other users to translate their needs into practical, useful products
  • good knowledge of Italian and excellent knowledge of English

Employment Details:

  • Start date: By mutual agreement; fixed-term contract until November 2, 2027
  • Salary: To be discussed
