Headquartered in Darmstadt, Germany, EUMETSAT (European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites) is an intergovernmental organization responsible for establishing, maintaining, and operating Europe's systems of operational meteorological and Earth-observation satellites. The organization develops and manages advanced geostationary and polar-orbiting satellite fleets, delivering continuous weather data, imagery, and atmospheric products to national meteorological services, scientific institutions, and environmental agencies worldwide. By providing high-precision space-based observation data for short-term weather forecasting, severe storm tracking, and long-term climate change monitoring, it underpins public safety, disaster risk reduction, and environmental decision-making on a global scale.

VN 26/54 Junior Machine Learning Engineer for Earth Observation

The successful candidate is a highly motivated and forward-thinking junior professional, who is keen on exploring state-of-the art concepts situated at the intersection of Machine Learning, Earth Observation and Meteorology and committed to bringing promising ones into operations. The successful candidate will become a member of a young and striving team within the Digital Solutions and SAF division, engaged in the design of innovative cloud-based services and Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) tools and solutions that facilitate the exploitation of Earth Observation and meteorological data via Machine Learning (ML) based algorithms.

The role includes cross-team collaboration with remote sensing scientists and end user representatives, literature reviews and prototyping Proof-of-Concepts for checking feasibility of Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) concepts as well as design and development of end-to-end ML pipelines.

Duties

  • Keep abreast with industry trends, emerging concepts, and best practices in the field of Machine Learning for Earth Observation and Meteorology and leverage this knowledge to drive innovation by starting new proof-of-concepts;
  • Prototype and evaluate AI/ML use cases for Earth observation and meteorological data, translating promising concepts into robust services;
  • Design, develop, and operationalise cloud-based ML services and pipelines supporting the full ML lifecycle;
  • Work with remote sensing scientists, product stakeholders, and external partners to define requirements, design solutions and evaluate results;
  • Interact on a technical level with industrial service providers and partners from other organisations.
