Finom is an Amsterdam-based fintech company that offers entrepreneurs, freelancers and small and medium-sized businesses an all-in-one financial platform combining business accounts, cards, payments, invoicing and AI-enabled accounting. Founded in 2019 and operated through PNL Fintech and Finom Payments, it serves customers in Germany, France, the Netherlands, Italy and Spain and has raised about 346 million US dollars, including a 115 million euro Series C and growth funding from General Catalyst. It hires remote software, AI and data engineers, product managers and designers, multilingual customer care and account managers, and finance and risk staff.

Finom is a fast-growing European fintech, and our legal team is growing with the business: more customers, more colleagues, more vendors, more marketing, more markets. The result is a steady, high-volume flow of day-to-day legal work that today lands on the desks of senior lawyers who should be spending their time on complex regulatory and strategic matters.

That is why this role exists. As our Junior Legal Counsel, you will be the first line of defence for routine, high-volume legal work across four domains - commercial contracting, data protection and privacy, employment, and intellectual property - and you will own it end to end. It is a genuine generalist seat: from day one you will see the breadth of work that a law-firm associate, or a junior lawyer in a large in-house team, would wait years to touch.

You will report directly to our Head of Corporate Legal Affairs and work side by side with a small, senior, hands-on team of 4. There is no backlog hidden in a folder waiting for you - the work is being done today, just by the wrong people. Your first months are about getting to know Finom and then taking work off your colleagues, one category at a time, with their full support behind you.

What You Will Be Doing

    Own the day-to-day legal queue

  • Draft, review and negotiate NDAs and standard commercial agreements - including our own templates, short-form partnership agreements, amendments, renewals, order forms, SOWs and subscriptions - within agreed playbooks and fallback positions.

  • Answer legal and contract queries from the business (HR, Finance, Marketing, Procurement, IT and others):

  • Handle standard vendor engagements - contract reviews, drafting DPA’s, following the playbooks our senior counsel maintain.

  • Run privacy operations

  • Own data subject access requests and other data subject rights requests: intake, tracking, coordinating with the business and drafting the response.

  • Review vendor DPAs and standard clauses, and carry out transfer and one-time assessments within an agreed framework.

  • Keep our privacy records, including our RoPA, accurate and current.

  • Support employment, corporate and marketing

  • Prepare standard employment documentation from templates: contracts, addenda, references and routine HR queries within policy.

  • Be the first point of contact for basic corporate housekeeping, and prepare corporate documents from precedent for senior review.

  • Review marketing and content against our approved guidelines - claims, disclaimers and use of third-party IP.

  • Be the first answer - and build the layer that scales

  • Give first-pass answers and first-pass research on the everyday questions that arrive from non-lawyers over Slack (“is a letter of intent binding?”, “how much notice do we need on a three-month contract in Poland?”, “do we need to label AI-generated content?”), resolving what is clearly in scope and escalating what isn’t.

  • Keep our registers and trackers reliable - signed contracts in Jira, Zip and Google Drive, the PoA register, the template library - so “did we ever sign this?” is answered from a system rather than a Slack search.

  • Build and maintain the templates, playbooks and FAQs behind all of the above. This is how the role scales, and you will have protected time each week for it.

  • You will have real autonomy across all of the above. Higher-stakes matters - personal data breach notifications, DPIAs, material negotiated contracts, complex employment questions, regulatory positions and anything setting a new company-wide precedent - sit with senior counsel, who will involve you so you learn how those calls get made.

Who You Are

  • Educational requirement. You hold a law degree from a recognised university (LL.B., LL.M. or local equivalent). Bar admission is welcome but not required.

  • Early in your career. 0-3 years of relevant experience in a law firm, an in-house legal team or a regulatory body. Substantive trainee and internship experience counts.

  • Grounded in at least one relevant area. Demonstrable exposure to corporate or commercial contracting, employment law, data protection and GDPR, or IP - and real curiosity about the others.

  • Fluent in English. You work in professional English every day, in writing and in conversation.

  • Reliable under volume. You are organised, you keep a queue moving, and you don’t let things go quiet. People always know where their request stands.

  • Comfortable with ambiguity. Requests here arrive as a message from someone who isn’t a lawyer. You are happy to frame the question yourself rather than wait for it to be framed for you.

  • Pragmatic and commercial. You look for the compliant route rather than defaulting to no.

  • Genuinely up for the work. For the first 12-18 months, high-volume standard work is the core of this job - and the reason you will build unusual breadth fast. You find that satisfying rather than beneath you.

  • Humble, eager and easy to work with. You give and take feedback well, you communicate clearly, and you can talk about what you did rather than what your team did.

Why This Role, and Why Finom

  • Breadth from day one. Commercial, privacy, employment and IP - not the narrow slice you would get as a law-firm associate or in a large in-house team at this stage.

  • Real ownership immediately. You own your matters end to end, not fragments of someone else’s.

  • Senior lawyers within reach. A small, flat team means direct access to experienced counsel, close supervision where you want it, and mentorship we take seriously.

  • You build, not just execute. The template and playbook layer doesn’t exist yet. You will create it, and it will outlast you.

  • A clear path forward. Finom is growing quickly, and so are the legal topics that come with it. There is a visible route to grow with the organisation, and we will invest in getting you there.

Good to Know Before You Apply

We would rather be straight with you now than have you find out in month three.

  • The work is high-volume, and some of it is repetitive. NDAs, standard contracts, DSARs and marketing reviews are the job, not a distraction from it.

  • Our process is partly documented and partly in people’s heads. There are templates but no complete playbook, and intake isn’t yet in one channel. You will be building some of that as you go.

  • The pace is high and context-switching is constant. Requests come from several directions and are rarely framed as clean legal questions.

  • You will be broad before you are deep. Four domains at once means generalist first, specialist later - a real trade-off, and one worth being explicit about.

Our hiring process

  • Short test task with your application (in case your CV matches the requirements), so we assess your work and not just your CV.

  • Screening call with our Talent Partner (30 minutes).

  • Interview with the Head of Corporate Legal Affairs and a senior member of the legal team (45 minutes), focused on your legal thinking.

  • Team and culture conversation with two of your future colleagues (30 minutes).
