Backend Lead Developer

Responsibilities:

• Design, architect, and build scalable backend systems and services powering FirstClub's platforms.
• Lead the development of robust, secure, and high-performance applications using Java and related technologies.
• Drive technical decisions, system design, and architecture discussions across backend services.
• Mentor and guide engineers through code reviews, technical problem-solving, and engineering best practices.
• Collaborate closely with product, frontend, and cross-functional teams to deliver business-critical features.
• Optimise application performance, database design, and system scalability to support rapid growth.
• Build and maintain microservices, APIs, and distributed systems with a focus on reliability and maintainability.
• Integrate third-party services, payment gateways, and internal tools as required.
• Establish and improve engineering processes, deployment workflows, monitoring, and automation practices.
• Troubleshoot complex production issues and ensure high availability of backend systems.
• Contribute to technical roadmap planning and help shape the overall engineering culture.

Requirements:

• 7+ years of experience in Backend Development or Software Engineering.
• Strong expertise in Java and backend frameworks such as Spring Boot.
• Hands-on experience building scalable distributed systems and microservices architectures.
• Strong understanding of REST APIs, system design, design patterns, and backend best practices.
• Experience working with databases such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, or similar.
• Good understanding of cloud platforms (AWS/GCP/Azure), deployment pipelines, and containerization technologies.
• Experience with caching, messaging systems, and performance optimisation techniques.
• Strong problem-solving, debugging, and analytical skills.
• Ability to lead technical initiatives and mentor engineers.
• High ownership, accountability, and attention to detail.
• Experience in consumer tech, e-commerce, fintech, or high-growth startup environments is preferred.
