About this role

Studio blocks are Flodesk's design infrastructure: the composable units members use to build inside Studio without making every design decision themselves. This role owns and grows that system as Studio's surface area expands, which means real web layout thinking, not just email-safe layout: responsive behavior, interaction states, and composition that holds up under real content and real screen sizes.

Part of the work is under art direction: our design lead sets creative direction on brand-defining surfaces, and you translate that into systematic, buildable design. Part of the work is under your ownership: on the surfaces you own outright by originating the designs yourself. You'll work closely with our engineers and product team throughout from definition through build and QA, not handing off a file and moving on. You'll also be working inside a design system we've already built: learning how it thinks, applying it consistently, and knowing when to extend it versus when to reuse what's there.

This is a craft role and a systems role at once. We need someone with real web design skills, not only systems discipline, who also wants to make their decisions hold up at scale. It's not a campaign creative role, and it's not a design engineering role: production code isn't required.

What you'll do

Product block design and system [40%]

• Design the blocks themselves across the product: layout, responsive behavior, states, composition rules
• Make them systematic: component architecture, tokens, naming and documentation, so they arrive ready to use and hold up as the set grows
• Own the Figma source of truth and the structured definitions the block pipeline consumes
• Partner with engineering and product from definition through build: align on how blocks are specified, review implementations against the Figma source, and iterate together
• Work inside Flodesk's existing design system rather than beside it: apply it consistently, extend it where the product needs something new, and curate it so it stays coherent as the set grows

Web design system for Flodesk's own surfaces [25%]

• Build a component and template library for flodesk.com so landing pages ship in days, not weeks
• Design page templates, section patterns and responsive rules
• Originate new layouts, not only assemble from existing ones
• Apply current best practices in web design, digital product UX and template design, and be able to say when a convention should be followed and when it should be broken

AI-legible system design [20%]

• Design constraints, schemas and token structures that let AI generation produce on-brand output reliably
• Develop a working sense of where generation breaks, and design upstream to prevent it
• Use Claude (or equivalent) as part of your daily workflow

Brand toolkits [15%]

• Build Figma toolkits, presets and brand systems that designers, content creators and partners can use without a designer in the loop for every request
• Maintain a deep, internalized understanding of the Flodesk brand

This role doesn't cover marketing campaigns, social content, event creative or illustration. Those stay with our creative designers.

What you bring

• Outstanding web design craft: layout, composition, type, hierarchy, responsive behavior. A portfolio showing pages and interfaces that are genuinely well designed
• Articulated design judgment about conversion and usability. You can explain what makes a landing page work, what makes a form feel effortless, what makes a page fail, and defend it
• Production design system experience, in both directions: you've built a system from scratch, and you've inherited one and made it better. Component architecture, tokens, naming, documentation, curation, and a story about adoption
• Deep experience in Figma: variables, tokens, component APIs, variants, modes and themes, library architecture
• Working knowledge of current best practices across web design, digital products and templates: responsive standards, conversion patterns, accessibility basics, and a clear view of what a good template should and shouldn't decide for the person using it
• AI fluency as a working practice. You use Claude or equivalent daily, and have a point of view on connecting AI to design workflows and on designing systems that generate well
• Comfortable working under art direction while holding an independent craft standard: you can take direction, push back with reasoning, and deliver something better than what was described
• Demonstrated collaboration with engineers and product teams as a day-to-day working partner, not a handoff point, ideally where your design output is consumed as structured data rather than as visual reference
• Strong written communication. A meaningful share of this role's output is documentation
