Job Description
Location: Wallingford, Oxfordshire
Working pattern: Laboratory-based, Full Time, Permanent.
Hours: 37.5 hours per week
Join Fugro as a Senior Geotechnical Engineer (Laboratory) and help deliver accurate, reliable and scientifically robust geotechnical data that supports important client projects. Based within our Geotechnical Laboratory in Wallingford, you will combine hands-on testing with technical review, data validation and continuous improvement. Working alongside laboratory colleagues, engineers, project teams and technical specialists, you will help maintain the high standards our clients rely on while strengthening our laboratory capability. You will report to the Team Leader - Rock Testing and have opportunities to share your knowledge, support others and contribute to the development of testing methods and services.
Your role and responsibilities
- Perform and support a varied range of geotechnical soil and rock laboratory tests, ensuring work is completed safely and in line with approved procedures, recognised technical standards and accreditation requirements.
- Review and validate test results, calculations, observations and derived parameters, identifying anomalies or inconsistencies and escalating technical concerns when appropriate.
- Protect the quality and integrity of laboratory data by applying ISO/IEC 17025 requirements, laboratory quality systems and robust data-integrity principles.
- Provide practical technical support during testing, investigations and method development, helping the team resolve issues and implement effective improvements.
- Contribute to audits, quality reviews, accreditation activities, lessons learned and the consistent application of laboratory best practice.
- Share your knowledge through coaching, training and competency development, helping colleagues build confidence and technical capability.
- Promote a safety-first culture by supporting risk assessments, toolbox talks, safety moments and investigations into incidents, near misses and non-conformances.
What you’ll need to thrive in this role
- A bachelor’s degree, or equivalent professional capability, in geotechnical or civil engineering, geology, or a closely related discipline.
- Strong technical knowledge of geotechnical laboratory testing, soil or rock behaviour, data interpretation, and the review and validation of technical results.
- A good understanding of laboratory quality assurance, data integrity and working in accordance with recognised procedures and standards.
- Prior experience managing a small team, mentoring colleagues, working collaboratively and understanding team capabilities.
- The ability to communicate clearly, organise competing priorities and collaborate effectively with colleagues from different technical and project disciplines.
- A careful, safety-conscious approach, with strong numeracy skills and attention to detail.
- Highly desirable: Experience in a geotechnical soil, rock or materials-testing laboratory; familiarity with LIMS; a master’s degree; or graduate membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers or the Geological Society of London would be beneficial.
