HDR

HDR is an employee-owned architecture, engineering, environmental and construction services firm headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska. Founded in 1917 and fully owned by its employees, it designs highways, bridges, freight rail and transit, water and wastewater systems, power infrastructure, hospitals, science facilities and data centers for public agencies and private clients from offices across the US and abroad. Hiring spans civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, water resources and traffic engineers, project managers and schedulers, software engineers and product managers, plus a large summer internship program.

About Us

At HDR, we specialise in engineering, architecture, environmental and construction services. Our global team of more than 15,000 employees is united by our values and strengthened by our employee-owned culture. We collaborate across disciplines, leverage global expertise, and empower our people to create solutions that make a lasting impact.

The Role

Join HDR's national electrical engineering team delivering medium voltage (11kV-66kV) electrical infrastructure, substations, data centres and mission critical facilities across Australia.

We are looking for an experienced technical specialist in medium voltage power systems who can provide technical leadership across complex electrical infrastructure projects.

Working at Associate or Senior Associate level, you'll act as a technical authority within the team, leading complex MV design and analysis, providing technical review and assurance, solving challenging engineering problems and supporting clients and multidisciplinary project teams.

Based in Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane, you'll work across a nationally connected portfolio while collaborating with HDR's local and international technical specialists.

What You'll Be Working On

  • Mission critical and data centre electrical infrastructure
  • Medium voltage (11kV-66kV) electrical systems
  • Substations and network-connected infrastructure
  • Protection and control systems
  • Power system modelling and analysis
  • Network resilience and capacity upgrade projects
  • Multidisciplinary infrastructure developments

What Makes This Role Different?

This is more than a traditional technical design role.

This is a senior technical role for an engineer who brings genuine depth in medium voltage power systems.

You'll provide technical leadership across complex projects, influence engineering solutions and design decisions, and act as a trusted technical adviser to clients and project teams.

Alongside your own technical delivery, you'll help strengthen MV capability across the broader electrical team through technical review, mentoring and knowledge sharing, with access to HDR's international mission critical and power expertise.

What You’ll Bring

We're looking for an experienced electrical engineer with consulting experience and significant medium voltage engineering experience.

Strong technical capability in medium voltage systems is essential, including experience across areas such as:

  • Design and delivery of 11kV-66kV electrical infrastructure and power distribution systems
  • Mission critical or data centre projects
  • Substation and network-connected infrastructure
  • Detailed MV protection and control design
  • Protection coordination and protection studies
  • Power system modelling and analysis
  • Technical review, design assurance and resolution of complex MV engineering issues
  • Development and review of technical specifications and engineering documentation
  • Providing technical guidance and mentoring to other engineers
  • Working directly with clients, utilities and multidisciplinary project teams

Experience with ETAP, SKM, PSCAD, PowerCad or similar platforms will be highly regarded.

Why Join HDR?

  • Employee ownership model - share in the success you help create
  • Major project exposure - work on complex electrical infrastructure
  • Career development - mentoring and support from experienced technical and project leaders
  • Collaborative culture - work within a multidisciplinary team that values quality and innovation
  • Global TMT expertise - collaborate with HDR's internationally recognised mission critical and data centre teams. #LI-CG3
