AI Software Engineer (Agentic AI), Freelance
HelsinkiTech builds AI systems for Finnish companies. We build software where agents do real work, not systems with a chat window bolted onto the side.
We’re looking for a freelance engineer whose home ground is the agentic layer: tools, context, memory, orchestration, and the evaluations that tell you whether any of it actually works.

What defines this role
Safe by design. Nothing important happens without human approval, and security comes first. You build systems clients can trust.
What you will do
Build agentic systems as the core of client software
Design agentic workflows: tool design, context, memory, planning and orchestration. Use multi-agent setups only when the problem truly calls for them.

Decide where the agent ends and deterministic code begins. Not everything should be an agent, and knowing the difference is a big part of the job.

Design the guardrails and human oversight a system needs to be trusted in production. Treat cost, scalability and reliability as design questions, not later fixes.

Build and run the evaluations
Set up evals that test quality, catch regressions, and track performance against cost: accuracy, drift, correction rate.

Treat evals as part of the system, not a report at the end. If we can’t measure whether the agent got better, we don’t know whether it did.

What you bring
You don’t need every item. Be confident in several and willing to learn the rest.
Agentic engineering
Hands-on experience building agentic systems (tools, context, memory, planning, orchestration). Your opinions come from things breaking in real projects.

Practical experience building and running AI evaluations, and the judgment to weigh quality against cost.

Daily fluency with coding agents (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or similar), well beyond prompting: skills, subagents, parallel runs, and a sense of what to delegate and what to verify yourself.

Software engineering
Experience with at least one major cloud (Azure, GCP or AWS), including infrastructure, access and governance.

Enough backend and frontend skill to take a system from architecture to interface without a finished spec.

Practical experience with data pipelines.

LLM APIs (Claude, OpenAI, Gemini), RAG and vector databases.

Git, testing and clean code.

Security
Necessary: deep understanding of cybersecurity and of building secure agents.

Mindset
We’re looking for someone creative, positive and growth-minded.

You like working close to the people who use what you build.

You can read a client’s business well enough to make good calls without a full spec.

You ship early, test with real users, and change direction when new information says so.

You’re comfortable with ambiguity and unfinished things.

You’re straightforward and easy to work with in a small, evolving company.

You’re willing to say “not yet” or “AI isn’t the answer here.”

Practicalities
Freelance, per-project contract. Remote.

Start: Immediately when the right freelancer is found.

Languages: English and Finnish are required. If your Finnish isn’t fluent, you must be able to produce fluent, accurate Finnish with AI translation.

Long-term collaboration is possible if the work goes well.
