A cover letter is required to be considered for this position and will serve as your initial writing sample. The cover letter must reflect your own original writing and must not be AI-generated. Applicants who do not submit a cover letter, or who submit an AI-generated cover letter, will not be considered.

The Content Writer plays a pivotal role in driving revenue growth by drafting personalized, persuasive proposal narratives that strategically position HMH programs and services in response to requests for proposals, bids, and rubrics issued by schools, districts, and states.

As part of the RFP, Bids & Contracts team, the Content Writer serves as the team’s content expert on selected programs, works with product management and curriculum design teams to maintain expertise, and is responsible for creating and/or updating narratives to reflect changes to content, selling points, competition, and pricing models. This person works with sales and product management and is instrumental in strategic decision-making and positioning of responses.

The Content Writer must juggle multiple proposals and tight deadlines. Daily activities include proposals launch calls, cross-company collaboration, independent research, continuous program and services learning, and proposal writing.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the team’s content expert on selected programs, work with product management and curriculum design teams to maintain expertise, and create and/or update narratives to reflect changes to content, selling points, competition, and pricing models.
  • Contribute to strategic decision-making and positioning using SFDC data, customer details, customer needs and preferences, and information-gathering on factors such as budget, history, weighted items, etc. Actively participate in RFX discussion calls to drive an understanding of an RFX’s intent, key criteria, and deliverables among all participants.
  • Write full proposal narratives and responses for primary programs. Write or contribute to proposal narratives and responses for secondary programs and boilerplate when needed.
  • Share primary program updates/changes, distribute revised narrative to the team. Work with content repository team liaison to maintain current content.
  • Work with team to improve processes and systems that create a culture of collaboration and increase engagement across the team.

What You Will Need to Be Successful:

  • Exceptional independent writing skills. Writers must be able to create high-quality, original content from a blank page, developing the narrative, structure, and messaging independently rather than relying on existing content or others to provide a starting point. Responsibilities include both creating brand-new content and revising existing narratives.
  • Minimum of three years of experience teaching core curriculum (ELA, mathematics, science, or social studies) in the K-12 public school environment. Experience must be in-person, not virtual. Applicants without this experience will not be considered.
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail/consistency.
  • Bachelor's degree required; master’s degree preferred.
  • Ability to work effectively with subject-matter experts and participants from across the company.
  • Strong initiative, resourcefulness, and independent research skills. Writers must be comfortable encountering unfamiliar topics, determining what they need to learn, seeking out credible sources, and building the knowledge necessary to complete their work. Success in this role requires proactively finding information and solutions rather than waiting for information to be provided by others.
  • Ability to manage a high-volume, unpredictable workload with multiple competing deadlines. Proposal assignments are driven by district-issued deadlines, which means workloads may fluctuate significantly and several complex proposals may be due within the same timeframe. Success in this role requires strong organization, prioritization, adaptability, and the ability to independently manage multiple assignments when deadlines cannot be adjusted.
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Office Suite.

Nice to Have:

  • Experience writing descriptive responses to RFPs issued by school districts.
  • Master's degree in a field related to the position.
  • Experience teaching multiple subjects.
  • Knowledge of curricula, educational theory and trends, national and state standards, proposal automation systems, Chicago Manual of Style, and devices used in educational environments.
