Job Role: Senior Bookkeeper

Compensation range: $2,000 AUD - $2,800 AUD / Monthly

Engagement type: Independent Contractor Agreement

Work Schedule: This role is expected to align with the AU business hours (approx. 9 AM - 5 PM, Monday to Friday) for collaboration, but as a contractor, you’ll have flexibility in how you manage your time.

They take a collaborative and down-to-earth approach to client service and have built a team culture centred on accountability, proactive support, and delivering meaningful outcomes for their clients.

Role Overview: The client is looking for a technically strong and highly organised Senior Bookkeeper / Management Accountant who can handle both detailed transactional work and more complex responsibilities such as month-end processes, management reporting, and preparation of accounts for tax. The role supports clients across varied industries and systems and requires someone adaptable, confident with technology, and able to understand the broader financial impact of transactions to produce accurate and reliable financial information.

Key Responsibilities:

• Manage full-cycle bookkeeping across multiple Australian client files, including bank, credit card, loan and Balance Sheet reconciliations.
• Prepare month-end and year-end workpapers, journals, accruals, prepayments, depreciation and other adjustments.
• Prepare accounts and supporting schedules to a standard suitable for accountant review, annual tax returns and financial statements.
• Prepare and review BAS and IAS calculations, applying correct Australian GST treatment.
• Process and review Australian payroll, including PAYG withholding, superannuation, leave and employee entitlements.
• Prepare management accounts, monthly reporting packs, variance analysis and other financial reports.
• Investigate discrepancies, aged balances and reconciliation issues, and recommend appropriate solutions.
• Reconcile accounting records with inventory, e-commerce, POS and other operational systems where applicable.
• Support accounts payable, accounts receivable and transactional processing as required.
• Review work completed by other team members where appropriate and identify errors, process gaps and opportunities for improvement.
• Communicate clearly with the Australian team regarding outstanding information, risks, issues and recommended actions.

Requirements

• Minimum 5 years’ senior-level bookkeeping, accounting or management accounting experience supporting Australian businesses.
• Strong practical knowledge of Australian bookkeeping and accounting requirements, ideally gained across multiple clients or entities.
• Strong understanding of Balance Sheet and Profit & Loss accounts, month-end accounting and advanced reconciliations.
• Demonstrated experience preparing workpapers and accounting files for year-end and tax review.
• Strong knowledge of Australian GST, BAS and IAS requirements.
• Strong knowledge of Australian payroll requirements, including PAYG withholding, superannuation and employee entitlements.
• Strong experience with Xero or QuickBooks Online.
• Strong Excel skills.
• Highly organised with the ability to manage multiple clients, priorities and deadlines independently.
• Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to investigate issues through to resolution.
• Detail-oriented, proactive and comfortable taking ownership of client files and deliverables.
• Tech-savvy and confident learning new systems, workflows, automation and AI tools.
• Clear and professional communication skills.

Highly Desirable Skills

• Inventory accounting and experience with systems such as Cin7 or similar.
• E-commerce bookkeeping and experience with platforms such as Shopify and A2X.
• Experience reconciling accounting systems against inventory, POS, payment or e-commerce platforms.
• Management accounting and management reporting experience.
• Australian not-for-profit bookkeeping and financial reporting experience, including grant income and expenditure tracking, budget monitoring, grant acquittals and supporting documentation.
• Experience with payroll/workforce systems such as Tanda, Deputy or Employment Hero.
• Experience with accounts payable automation or receipt capture tools such as Dext or Lightyear.
• Experience with reporting, dashboarding, workflow or practice management systems.
• Experience reviewing the work of junior bookkeeping staff.
• Previous experience within an Australian accounting or bookkeeping practice.
