Infopro Digital is a B2B information and technology group serving professionals in construction and the public sector, automotive, risk and insurance, industry and retail. Founded in 2001, it is present in 26 countries with more than 4,000 employees and runs media, data, software and events businesses. The group is headquartered in Antony, near Paris, France.

Infopro Digital, the B2B group specialising in information and technology, is currently looking for a Reporter on a permanent contract to strengthen the Risk.net team in New York.

About Infopro Digital

The best of both worlds. That is what a position with Infopro Digital offers you.

Infopro Digital is a global B2B company with 4,000 employees and annual revenues of over half a billion dollars, with a presence in 26 countries. Through our market-leading brands, we serve five professional communities - insurance and finance, automotive aftermarket, construction, retail, and industrials - enabling our clients to make informed business decisions and create new opportunities.

About Risk.net

Would you like to write about some of the most high-profile and dynamic developments in the financial markets - from the electronification of trading and the evolution of market structure to the pricing of complex derivatives and the fast-moving world of foreign exchange? Risk.net is seeking an energetic and insightful journalist to join its Markets desk, based in New York with hybrid working.

The ideal candidate will be passionate and knowledgeable about finance and markets, with a talent for bringing complex topics to life, and the ability to combine the best elements of trade and mainstream financial journalism to produce must-read articles that stand out from the crowd. They should be equally adept at breaking news and writing in-depth, long-form features. A proven ability to build and maintain strong source relationships is a must.

Risk.net covers financial institutions and markets for a professional audience, including senior executives at banks, hedge funds and regulators. The Markets desk is central to this effort, with a remit that spans the globe.

The publication

Risk.net is a rare beast: a financial industry publication that thrives on long-form investigative journalism. We give our journalists the time and resources necessary to produce great stories. Standards are high, but so is management support.

Risk.net has a collegiate style - our team of around 30 journalists and editors, spread across three offices, actively collaborate on projects and pool their insights and contacts.

Risk.net is part of Risk Global, Infopro Digital’s financial services unit: a 300-person organisation with offices in London, Hong Kong, New York and Nashville. We earn most of our revenues from subscriptions, providing a stable financial base.

The role

The reporter will help drive coverage for the largest of Risk’s four desks - in terms of both traffic and headcount. The reporting will compose of a mix of regular news stories, deeply reported features, profiles and data-led articles.

The role requires at least two years’ financial reporting experience, preferably within capital markets, but not exclusively. The successful applicant must be a good contact builder and be able to generate their own story ideas.

Traditionally an OTC derivatives publication, Risk’s coverage has evolved along with those markets - encompassing flow trading, as well as structured and exotic products. For flow, stories may focus on market structure, electronic and automated trading, as well as the cash and listed products that are traded alongside standardised OTC derivatives. In the structured and exotic space, coverage tends to focus more heavily on products, pricing, valuation and risk management.

In all cases, Risk’s coverage stands out by virtue of its depth. We may not always be first, but we will always offer more insight and analysis.

Our readers represent the full cross-section of the market, and our reporting reflects that - we speak to banks and non-bank liquidity providers, asset managers, hedge funds, pension funds, insurers, corporate treasurers, regulators and supervisors, exchanges, trading platforms and clearing houses, lawyers, consultants, and software vendors. This is a great strength, enabling us to piece together complex stories that have multiple stakeholders. It also means we have to be sensitive to a story’s nuances: there may not always be a clear winner, or a clear loser.

As derivatives trading has become more transparent, our Markets stories increasingly make use of public datasets - and we expect this kind of reporting to become increasingly important.

In 2020, the Markets desk expanded to incorporate coverage of foreign exchange trading for spot and derivatives. The desk’s reporting on these topics appears in Risk.net as well as a sister title, FX Markets, and the reporter would be expected to lean into this asset class more than others.

Key responsibilities

  • Generate a regular flow of news stories for web and print. This includes a mix of exclusive news pieces, conference stories data-led articles.
  • Research and write 2,000-3,000 word feature articles, which require several interviews with various market participants and observers.
  • Build reliable contacts across a variety of market segments, and use them to generate story ideas or develop existing ones.

Requirements

  • Proven journalism experience, ideally at least two years covering finance, capital markets or law
  • Knowledge of the financial markets and their major players; an interest in foreign exchange and derivatives is a strong advantage
  • Impeccable writing skills and a knack for explaining complex topics in plain English. An ability to write with flair and, when appropriate, a sense of humour would be a bonus!
  • Confidence working with data and public datasets to find and support stories
  • A keen eye for detail and nuance
  • A willingness to learn about a broad range of financial topics
