NB: Willing to pay relocation costs for the right candidate.
Responsibilities:
Firmware Architecture & Development: Design, implement, and maintain low-latency C/C++ firmware for microcontrollers (ARM Cortex-M) powering GSM/LTE communicators and alarm panels.
Communications & Protocols: Develop and optimize driver stacks (UART, SPI, I2C), cellular communications (GSM/LTE), and protocol handlers for reliable bi-directional alarm signaling.
System Reliability & Security: Implement diagnostics, watchdog/recovery mechanisms, logging, and security practices to ensure maximum uptime and power efficiency.
Hardware Integration & Bring-Up: Collaborate with hardware teams on schematic reviews, board bring-up, signal integrity, and design-for-manufacture (DFM).
Software & Cloud Integration: Support OTA firmware updates, device provisioning, and backend/cloud API interfaces alongside the software team.
Testing, Field Support & Compliance: Perform field testing, analyze field logs to resolve complex root-cause issues, and ensure compliance with South African (ICASA) standards.
Technical Leadership: Drive coding standards, conduct code reviews, document architectures, and mentor junior engineers.
Minimum Requirements:
Experience: 8+ years of professional embedded firmware / software development experience.
Technical Skills: Strong C/C++ proficiency on resource-constrained microcontrollers (ARM Cortex-M preferred); solid RTOS (e.g., FreeRTOS) or bare-metal development background.
Cellular & Peripherals: Proven experience with cellular modems (2G/3G/4G/LTE), AT command sets, and peripheral buses (UART, SPI, I2C, ADC, DMA).
Tools & Debugging: Proficiency with Git, JTAG/SWD debuggers, logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and CI/CD pipelines for embedded systems.
Problem Solving: Track record of deploying production-grade firmware and debugging complex, intermittent field issues.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electronic/Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent practical experience.
Desirable / Advantageous Skills
Experience in security, telemetry, IoT, or industrial automation sectors.
Familiarity with alarm signaling protocols (e.g., Contact ID, SIA).
Experience with OTA update architectures and device management platforms.
Knowledge of low-power design and battery-backed power management techniques.
Familiarity with ICASA regulatory compliance for radio equipment.
Scripting capability (Python) for automated testing and internal tooling.
Benefits:
Competitive salary based on experience (salary can potentially be more based on experience/skills)
