This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an ELA Item Writer II based in the United States.

The ELA Item Writer II develops high-quality assessment content focused on reading and literacy for K-12 learners.

This role combines English Language Arts expertise with assessment design, creativity, and analytical thinking.

You will collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to create test items, passages, performance tasks, and interactive assessment experiences.

The position offers the opportunity to contribute to large-scale standardized assessments used across diverse educational settings.

You will help ensure that assessment content is accurate, engaging, accessible, and aligned with defined learning objectives.

The role also provides exposure to assessment development, content review, item management, and evolving educational technologies.

This is a fully remote opportunity for candidates who live and work within the United States, with limited travel required.

Accountabilities

    • Develop passages, test questions, performance tasks, and other assessment content designed to measure student learning in reading and literacy.

    • Work collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams to develop high-quality, standards-aligned assessment materials.

    • Research and identify appropriate stimulus materials for assessments and obtain copyright permissions when required.

    • Create and review assessment items using specialized digital tools, including interactive items, simulations, and other technology-enhanced tasks.

    • Participate in individual and group item review sessions, incorporating feedback and documenting revisions accurately.

    • Assist with the assembly and review of field-test and operational assessment forms.

    • Contribute to ancillary assessment materials, including interpretive guides, score reports, item release websites, and related resources.

    • Support senior team members with the management of item banks and the development of new assessments, products, and services.

    • Contribute to the development and refinement of assessment specifications.

    • Identify potential issues in assessment content and propose practical, well-reasoned solutions.

    • Manage competing priorities effectively while meeting project deadlines and maintaining a high standard of accuracy and quality.

    • Travel approximately 1-6 times per year for required meetings or project activities, typically for 2-3 days at a time, including potential travel during the summer months.

    • Requirements

      • Bachelor’s degree in English or a related field is required.

      • Approximately 2-3 years of relevant professional experience in English Language Arts, assessment development, education, content development, or a related area.

      • Strong ELA subject-matter expertise and the ability to translate academic concepts into clear, effective assessment content.

      • Demonstrated creativity, analytical thinking, and exceptional attention to detail.

      • Ability to identify problems, evaluate information, and develop practical solutions.

      • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize multiple assignments and consistently meet deadlines.

      • Excellent written communication skills and the ability to contribute effectively during collaborative reviews.

      • Ability to work productively in interdisciplinary teams and incorporate feedback from colleagues and subject-matter experts.

      • Comfort learning and using specialized digital assessment tools and technology platforms.

      • Ability to work independently while maintaining effective communication and accountability within a remote environment.

      • Willingness and ability to travel as required for occasional business and project-related activities.
