This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an Engineering Director - Commercial Systems based in Germany.

This is a senior engineering leadership opportunity focused on shaping and operating critical commercial software platforms in a highly distributed environment.

You will oversee multiple engineering teams responsible for systems at the heart of billing, contracts, customer operations, and security services.

The role combines strategic platform ownership with hands-on technical understanding and strong people leadership.

You will guide engineering managers, strengthen delivery practices, and ensure teams consistently achieve high standards of quality and reliability.

Working across engineering and business functions, you will translate organizational needs into scalable product roadmaps and technical outcomes.

The environment is fast-moving, international, remote-first, and designed for leaders who value autonomy, ownership, and continuous learning.

This is an opportunity to influence both the technology and the engineering culture behind a growing global business.

Accountabilities

    • Lead and develop multiple software engineering teams, supporting engineers from graduate through senior levels and helping engineering managers build strong, high-performing teams.
    • Establish and promote effective engineering practices, development processes, performance standards, and a culture of technical excellence.
    • Own and drive product development roadmaps across commercial systems, ensuring priorities, delivery plans, and engineering outcomes remain aligned with business objectives.
    • Provide technical leadership across services supporting billing, contracts, customer operations, and Linux security, while ensuring scalable, reliable, and maintainable solutions.
    • Act as an active member of the Commercial Systems leadership team, collaborating with engineering leaders and business stakeholders to shape priorities and strategy.
    • Monitor team health and performance through meaningful indicators, addressing organizational or delivery challenges proactively.
    • Set clear performance goals and objectives for direct reports, provide ongoing coaching, and support their professional development.
    • Recruit and expand engineering teams by identifying, attracting, and developing exceptional technical talent.
    • Collaborate closely with stakeholders and product users to understand business needs and translate them into effective engineering solutions.
    • Lead continuous improvement initiatives across engineering organizations, encouraging innovation, accountability, and ownership.
    • Requirements:

      • Proven experience leading multiple software engineering teams or large engineering organizations and consistently delivering strong technical and business outcomes.
      • A strong academic background, ideally including an undergraduate degree in a technical discipline or equivalent evidence of a successful alternative career path.
      • Professional software engineering experience in at least one relevant area, such as Golang, Python, Java, distributed systems, or system integrations.
      • Demonstrated ability to lead through influence, manage competing priorities, and drive complex initiatives from strategy through execution.
      • Strong understanding of software engineering practices, with the ability to engage credibly with senior engineers and technical leaders.
      • A results-oriented mindset, strong ownership, and a proven tendency to go beyond expectations to deliver meaningful outcomes.
      • Excellent written and spoken English, with strong presentation and communication skills for working across technical and non-technical audiences.
      • Strong people-management capabilities, including coaching, performance management, talent development, and organizational leadership.
      • Ability and willingness to travel internationally approximately twice per year for company-wide or team events lasting up to two weeks.
      • Experience with performance engineering, DevOps, or SRE practices is a valuable advantage.
      • Familiarity with business domains such as accounting, sales, sales operations, or other commercial functions is a plus.
      • Benefits:

        • Fully remote working environment with a strong culture of distributed collaboration.
        • In-person team gatherings and company events approximately twice per year, with opportunities to travel internationally.
        • Annual personal learning and development budget of USD 2,000.
        • Annual compensation reviews designed to recognize performance, experience, and contribution.
        • Performance-driven annual bonus or commission in addition to base compensation.
        • Recognition and performance rewards.
        • Annual holiday leave.
        • Maternity and paternity leave.
        • Employee Assistance Program.
        • Opportunities to meet international colleagues and work from interesting locations.
        • Priority Pass access and travel upgrades for eligible long-haul company events.
        • A highly autonomous environment focused on ownership, continuous learning, engineering excellence, and meaningful impact.
