Intermediate Backend Engineer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Intermediate Backend Engineer based in India.

As an Intermediate Backend Engineer, you’ll build and ship production-grade backend features for a large-scale technology platform used by millions of users.

You’ll take ownership of features from problem clarification and design through implementation, testing, deployment, and production follow-up.

The role combines backend engineering, API development, databases, observability, security, and performance optimization.

You’ll work closely with product, frontend, infrastructure, and security teams in a highly collaborative environment.

The team operates remotely and asynchronously, giving you significant autonomy while providing experienced engineers for design and code reviews.

You’ll also use AI coding tools as part of your daily workflow while applying sound judgment to validate and improve AI-generated output.

Accountabilities

• Design, implement, test, and deliver backend features and improvements with minimal guidance, using Ruby/Rails, Go, or other modern backend technologies.
• Take ownership of features throughout their lifecycle, from clarifying requirements and designing solutions to deployment, monitoring, and production follow-up.
• Build secure, maintainable, observable, and high-performing backend services, APIs, background jobs, integrations, and modular components.
• Work with data models, database migrations, indexes, queries, and other backend infrastructure to ensure reliable system performance.
• Develop and improve automated testing, including unit, integration, contract, and end-to-end coverage where appropriate.
• Participate in code reviews and technical discussions, evaluating solutions for correctness, maintainability, security, performance, and operational risk.
• Investigate build, testing, deployment, and runtime issues, identify technical debt, and propose practical improvements.
• Contribute to on-call or operational support activities according to the team's ownership model.
• Collaborate with Product Management, Frontend, Infrastructure, Security, and other stakeholders to translate user and business needs into effective technical solutions.
• Use AI tools productively in everyday engineering work while critically reviewing, validating, and correcting generated code.

Requirements

• Professional experience developing and shipping production backend applications, with strong fundamentals in programming, APIs, databases, testing, debugging, and performance.
• Experience with Ruby/Rails, Go, or another modern backend language, together with the ability and willingness to adapt across technologies.
• Demonstrated ability to independently take features from requirements clarification through delivery and production follow-up while knowing when to seek input.
• Strong understanding of backend architecture, modular boundaries, coupling, maintainability, reliability, security, and operational risk.
• Experience designing and working with APIs, databases, background jobs, integrations, and production services.
• Strong written communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively in a remote, asynchronous environment.
• Practical experience using AI coding tools and the ability to review, validate, and improve AI-generated solutions.
• Experience with production Go services, APIs, concurrency, profiling, or gRPC is valuable.
• Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, CI/CD, cloud deployment, PostgreSQL, caching, queues, messaging, or event-driven architectures is a plus.
• Knowledge of Rust, observability practices, or experience contributing to modular monoliths, bounded contexts, shared components, or independently operated services is advantageous.
