Jobgether is an AI-powered job platform focused on remote and flexible work. It matches candidates with relevant roles using skills and preference-based algorithms, and also offers career coaching and job-search guidance.

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Software Engineer, MediaWiki Content Platform Team based in Australia.

Join a fully remote engineering team building the technology behind one of the world’s largest sources of open knowledge.

You’ll work on the Content Platform, evolving the wikitext infrastructure that powers collaborative editing and content experiences across hundreds of languages.

The role combines complex software engineering with opportunities to improve performance, usability, reliability, and maintainability at massive scale.

You’ll design and deliver systems used by hundreds of millions of people and collaborate with engineers, product managers, designers, client teams, and community contributors.

Your work will span parsing, language processing, APIs, caching, persistence, monitoring, and modern web technologies.

You’ll have substantial ownership of complex technical projects, from defining problems and architecture through implementation and delivery.

The role offers meaningful open-source work in an environment that values collaboration, autonomy, knowledge equity, and sustainable work-life balance.

Accountabilities

    • Design and deliver improvements to large-scale wikitext processing infrastructure, balancing user experience, performance, backwards compatibility, and long-term maintainability.
    • Own complex technical projects from problem definition through architecture, implementation, testing, and production delivery.
    • Collaborate closely with engineers, product managers, designers, client teams, and community members to iterate on features and resolve technical challenges.
    • Develop and maintain PHP and JavaScript software supporting content experiences across hundreds of languages.
    • Design, implement, and maintain reliable internet-facing APIs using appropriate server-side technologies.
    • Build and improve components that are performant, maintainable, and consumed by other teams, products, and large numbers of users.
    • Instrument systems and components to monitor performance, quality, reliability, and feature characteristics.
    • Leverage caching and persistence technologies to improve the scalability and responsiveness of content services.
    • Make and communicate architectural decisions while navigating ambiguity and balancing competing technical trade-offs.
    • Contribute to strong engineering practices through unit and integration testing, code reviews, security improvements, documentation, and maintainability initiatives.
    • Mentor other engineers through technical discussions, code reviews, documentation, and direct guidance, helping raise the technical quality of the wider team.
    • Requirements

      • 5+ years of relevant professional software engineering experience, with a track record of delivering production software at meaningful scale.
      • Experience with one or more areas such as parser generators, interpreters, language runtimes, compilers, or taking language features through a complete product lifecycle.
      • Demonstrated ability to independently lead complex technical projects, make architectural decisions, communicate trade-offs, and deliver outcomes with limited direction.
      • Experience designing and maintaining reliable, high-performance software components used by other teams, products, or large user populations.
      • Strong software engineering practices, including automated testing, code review, security awareness, and thoughtful architectural decision-making.
      • Strong ability to work across organizational and team boundaries, identify technical dependencies, resolve blockers, and bring projects to completion.
      • Experience mentoring engineers and helping improve team-wide technical quality through reviews, design discussions, documentation, or direct mentorship.
      • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in both synchronous and asynchronous environments.
      • Self-motivated and comfortable navigating ambiguity while maintaining ownership and momentum.
      • Familiarity with HTML5 specifications and DOM manipulation is a plus.
      • Expertise with Node.js and related technologies is advantageous.
      • Familiarity with wikitext, Markdown editing, content management systems, or technologies such as MediaWiki, Drupal, or WordPress is desirable.
      • A history of open-source contributions is a strong advantage.
      • A bachelor's, master's, or doctorate degree in computer science, software engineering, STEM, or equivalent professional certification is welcome but not essential.
      • An interest in knowledge equity, free culture, open access, and building technology that enables broad participation is highly valued.
      • Benefits

        • Fully remote working environment with a globally distributed team.
        • Opportunity to work on open-source software supporting hundreds of millions of users and extensive multilingual content.
        • Meaningful opportunity to contribute to knowledge equity, free culture, and open access.
        • Occasional travel opportunities for team, department, or organizational events.
        • Competitive, equitable compensation adjusted according to location, skills, experience, and other relevant factors.
        • Professional development and opportunities to deepen expertise in large-scale software engineering.
        • Collaborative, consensus-oriented culture with a strong emphasis on communication and inclusion.
        • Strong commitment to work-life balance and sustainable ways of working.
        • Inclusive workplace that values diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences.
        • Employment benefits applicable to the country of hire, including statutory benefits where required.
