Legacy Engineering is a woman-owned civil engineering firm specializing in land development design, geotechnical services, construction materials testing and inspections, land surveying, planning consulting, and environmental services. Headquartered in Fredericksburg, Virginia, we serve clients throughout the Commonwealth and beyond

Position Overview

Legacy Engineering is seeking a Geotechnical Engineer with approximately 3-6 years of experience to join our Geotechnical Engineering and Construction Materials Testing (CMT) team.

This position is ideal for an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) who has developed a solid foundation in geotechnical engineering and construction materials testing and is looking to continue growing professionally toward PE licensure. Licensed Professional Engineers are also encouraged to apply.

Working closely with our Geotechnical Principal Engineer and experienced technical staff, you will support geotechnical investigations, engineering analyses, construction inspections, and materials testing projects.

We are looking for someone who enjoys a combination of office-based engineering and hands-on fieldwork, can take ownership of assigned tasks, and is ready to develop additional technical and project responsibilities over time.

Key Responsibilities

Geotechnical Engineering

  • Assist with planning and coordinating subsurface investigations, including soil borings, test pits, and drilling operations.
  • Evaluate subsurface conditions, soil classifications, laboratory results, and field investigation data.
  • Perform geotechnical engineering calculations and analyses under the direction of a licensed Professional Engineer.
  • Assist with preparing geotechnical engineering reports, including foundation, earthwork, pavement, and site development recommendations.
  • Support field investigations, construction observations, and evaluations of soil and foundation conditions.
  • Coordinate with project managers, engineers, field technicians, and laboratory personnel.

Construction Materials Testing and Inspections

  • Provide engineering support for construction materials testing and special inspection projects.
  • Review field inspection reports, laboratory test results, and construction documentation for accuracy and compliance with project specifications.
  • Assist with evaluating soil compaction, concrete, asphalt, and other construction materials testing results.
  • Support field technicians in addressing testing issues, construction concerns, and technical questions.
  • Participate in site visits and communicate findings to project teams.

Project Coordination and Technical Support

  • Assist the Principal Engineer and project managers with project scheduling, coordination, and technical deliverables.
  • Support preparation of project proposals, scopes of work, and cost estimates.
  • Communicate with internal teams, clients, contractors, and other project stakeholders as needed.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation and assist with meeting project deadlines.
  • Take on increasing technical responsibilities as experience and capabilities develop.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant professional experience in geotechnical engineering, construction materials testing, or a combination of both.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Working knowledge of soil mechanics, subsurface investigations, and construction materials testing practices.
  • Ability to interpret engineering plans, specifications, field reports, and laboratory test results.
  • Strong technical writing, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks while collaborating with senior engineering staff.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Approximately 3-6 years of combined geotechnical engineering and CMT experience.
  • EIT certification with an interest in pursuing PE licensure.
  • Experience preparing or contributing to geotechnical engineering reports.
  • Familiarity with construction inspections, foundation evaluations, and earthwork operations.
  • Experience with geotechnical engineering software and engineering calculations.
  • Familiarity with ASTM testing standards and applicable construction inspection requirements.

Benefits

  • 8 Paid Holidays
  • 15 days of PTO
  • Comprehensive Medical, Dental and Vision Coverage including a low cost employee medical option
  • HSA and FSA plans available
  • Employer paid Short Term, Long Term, Life and AD&D Insurance plans
