Mission Software Systems (MSS) brings together expertise across intelligence, software, and cloud to deliver end-to-end capability supporting the full intelligence lifecycle, from planning through to dissemination and feedback. The team fosters a culture of innovation, leveraging modern engineering practices and shared infrastructure to rapidly build, test, and deploy software solutions across a range of environments, including cloud. MSS also plays a key role in advancing technology modernisation within Government, delivering scalable and adaptable solutions for complex enterprise challenges.

The Opportunity

As a Software Engineer, you will play a key role in developing and enhancing software capabilities that support complex Defence and mission-critical programs. Working within a collaborative Agile environment, you will contribute to the design, integration and sustainment of simulation software that enables system analysis, verification and operational decision-making.

In this role, you will:

• Design, develop and integrate software features for a modern microservices-based distributed system, working across technologies including Golang, TypeScript, Python, Kubernetes and Docker.
• Collaborate with systems engineers, test engineers, software specialists, subject matter experts and customer stakeholders to translate operational requirements and system behaviours into high-quality software solutions.
• Support the verification and validation of complex Defence capabilities through the development of software components, interfaces, supporting tools and engineering test cases, while analysing outputs and communicating technical findings.
• Contribute to the ongoing improvement of engineering practices through peer reviews, automated testing, configuration management and Agile delivery activities, helping to ensure reliable, scalable and maintainable software solutions.

About You

You are a Software Engineer who enjoys solving complex technical challenges and working as part of a multidisciplinary team to deliver meaningful outcomes. You bring a combination of software development expertise, analytical thinking and collaboration skills, enabling you to work effectively across technical teams and customer environments.

Essential for this role:

• Experience across software design, development, integration, testing and troubleshooting within complex software environments.
• Proficiency in Golang, TypeScript, Python, Java or a comparable programming language.
• Experience developing and integrating APIs, services, interfaces or technical data exchange solutions.
• Knowledge of containerisation technologies such as Kubernetes and/or Docker.
• Experience using Git or equivalent source-control systems and participating in peer-review processes.
• Ability to investigate software defects, analyse logs and interpret simulation or system outputs to identify and resolve technical issues.
• Experience producing software design documentation, interface specifications and test artefacts.
• Experience working within Agile delivery environments and collaborating with cross-functional engineering teams.
• Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to communicate technical concepts to a range of audiences.
• Relevant tertiary qualifications in Software Engineering, Computer Science or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience.

Advantageous:

• Experience within Defence, aerospace, command and control, communications, sensor or mission-system environments.
• Experience integrating software with complex, software-intensive systems, test environments or simulation platforms.
• Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, DevSecOps practices and modern software delivery toolsets.
• Experience using tools such as DOORS, Jazz, Jira or Confluence.
• Experience developing web applications using Angular.
• Working knowledge of PostgreSQL or similar database technologies.
• Familiarity with Defence technologies and protocols, including IFF and Link 16.
• Experience in software performance profiling, optimisation and system tuning.
• Ability to facilitate technical workshops, present findings and engage effectively with customers and stakeholders.

This role does require the successful applicant to be an Australian Citizen and hold an NV-1 security clearance.
