The UMI Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for underground maintenance, inspection, utility, and infrastructure projects. This position analyzes project plans, specifications, labor requirements, materials, equipment, subcontractor pricing, and production rates to develop comprehensive project estimates and proposals. The Estimator works closely with operations, project management, clients, vendors, and subcontractors to ensure bids are complete, competitive, and aligned with company objectives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Review project plans, drawings, specifications, bid documents, and contracts.
  • Prepare detailed quantity takeoffs for labor, materials, equipment, and subcontracted work.
  • Develop complete project cost estimates for underground maintenance, inspection, excavation, utility, and infrastructure projects.
  • Solicit and evaluate vendor and subcontractor quotations.
  • Analyze labor productivity, equipment requirements, and production rates.
  • Identify project risks, constructability concerns, and potential cost impacts.
  • Collaborate with project managers, superintendents, and field personnel to develop project execution strategies.
  • Prepare bid summaries, estimate reviews, and proposal packages.
  • Maintain and update historical cost databases and estimating resources.
  • Attend pre-bid meetings, site visits, and project walkthroughs as required.
  • Assist with value engineering and alternative construction methods to improve project competitiveness.
  • Track awarded projects and compare estimated costs against actual performance to improve future estimates.
  • Support change order pricing, budget development, and project forecasting efforts.
  • Ensure all estimates comply with company procedures and client requirements.
  • Participate in bid review meetings and present estimating recommendations to management.

Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of estimating experience in construction, utilities, underground maintenance, excavation, or infrastructure projects.
  • Strong understanding of construction methods, equipment, labor productivity, and project costs.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.
  • Strong mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

Preferred

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business, or a related field.
  • Experience estimating underground utility, maintenance, inspection, trenching, excavation, and civil construction projects.
  • Experience with estimating software such as HeavyBid, HCSS, B2W, AGTEK, Bluebeam, or similar platforms.
  • Knowledge of DOT, municipal, utility, and industrial project requirements.
  • Familiarity with project scheduling software and project management systems.

Working Conditions

  • Primarily office-based environment with occasional field visits.
  • Frequent computer and document review work.
  • Occasional travel to project sites, client meetings, and pre-bid conferences.
  • May require additional hours during bid preparation and submission deadlines.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit for extended periods while preparing estimates and reviewing documents.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and carry plans, bid packages, and office materials up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to walk construction sites and uneven terrain during site visits.
  • Ability to safely access active construction and maintenance project locations while utilizing required PPE.

This role requires compliance with all applicable safety regulations, personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements, and Loenbro's Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) policies.
