About the Role

Manifold is looking for an Engineering Manager to lead the Terra Platform team. Terra is the open-source, cloud-native platform for biomedical research originally built at the Broad Institute and now powered by Manifold. It supports 65,000 registered users across 50 countries, securely hosts 80+ petabytes of NIH data, and underpins some of the highest-impact science in the world.

 As Engineering Manager, you will lead the team that owns Terra day-to-day operations as well as delivering against a targeted feature roadmap. Operational responsibilities include service observability and monitoring, on-call support, dependency upgrades, and compliance audits. You will also work closely with Manifold Product Management as well as key Broad stakeholders to identify and solve the highest priority user problems. This is a player-coach role, and candidates are expected to split their time between team management and being hands-on with the code. Terra plays an critical role in Manifold’s partnership with the Broad Institute, and helps bring life-changing medicines to patients faster.

What You'll Do

• Own operational excellence for a platform that thousands of researchers depend on, including on-call rotations, incident triage, and risk mitigation initiatives.
• Partner with Product Management to define and deliver against a prioritized roadmap, balancing the needs of multiple stakeholders while also paying down operational debt.
• Partner with principal engineers on technical solutions, including architectural choices, design / code reviews, and individual code contributions.
• Manage a full-stack engineering team (including contractors) via 1:1s, growing top performers, identifying gaps, and hiring.
• Understand and clearly communicate Terra's role and how it contributes to Manifold's business strategy, including our commitments to the Broad and the NIH-funded community.
• Evolve how the team builds, including tools, libraries, and processes, and bring an AI-native mindset to the team.

What You'll Bring

• 10+ years of software engineering experience, including 3+ years of management experience.
• Experience managing contracts or off-shore resources.
• Hands-on Scala, Java, and SQL experience.
• A track record of building healthy, high-performing teams.
• Experience in life sciences industry, open-source communities, or other regulated environments is a strong plus.
• Experience working at the infrastructure layer (GCP, Terraform, etc) is also a plus.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills. You can explain technical risk to non-technical stakeholders and product context to engineers.
• You've integrated AI tools into your team's engineering workflows and have concrete examples of how that changed the team's output.
• You've done your homework on what it means to accelerate life sciences research and you can articulate why that mission matters to you.

Salary Range

The base salary range for this position is $210,000-$245,000 annually.
