This role sits within Client Services, a vertical of Digital Engineering Services (DES), the organisation’s core infrastructure function.

DES is responsible for delivering secure, scalable, and resilient infrastructure capabilities across the enterprise, including Storage, Network, Platform, SOC, and Service Management. Within this, Client Services team focuses on end-user-facing technologies, covering Desktop Services, Application Delivery and Messaging & Collaboration.

This role leads the enterprise messaging and collaboration portfolio, with a mandate to deliver robust, secure, and user-centric platforms such as Microsoft 365, Exchange Online, Teams, and related services. The role is instrumental in enabling modern, compliant, and efficient communication and collaboration for thousands of users across 15+ EMEA locations.

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

The Messaging and Collaboration SME will be responsible for the design, implementation, administration and optimisiation of enterprise messaging, collaboration, and mobile device management platforms. This includes Microsoft Exchange (on-premises and Online), Microsoft 365 (M365), Intune, and related technologies such as Teams, SharePoint Online, , Co-Pilot, Intune and Azure Active Directory.

This is an engineering and delivering focused role, providing technical leadership, project execution, and tier-3 escalation for complex issues. The SME will act as technical authority and trusted advisor to internal IT teams, driving modernisation initiatives, ensuring service reliability, and aligning collaboration solutions with business goals.

Agility, customer centricity and creativity will be critical for the successful candidate to fit into the organization. The Messaging and Collaboration engineers performs a wide variety of evaluations, maintenance, installation, and training tasks to ensure the messaging systems and infrastructure related equipment meets company and user satisfaction.

This combined with a large project pipeline, will allow someone with the right skills to have exposure to both BAU and project work. The environment is fast paced and allows huge exposure to the latest technologies, coupled with the ability to be involved with the planning, design and commissioning, of new and existing requirements.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Act as the technical lead for messaging, collaboration, and mobility project initiatives, ensuring solutions are delivered on time, within scope, and to high quality standards.

2. Lead and contribute to the design, engineering, and implementation of collaboration platforms, including Exchange, Microsoft 365, and Intune.

3. Provide technical direction, planning, and execution oversight during solution design, migration, and modernisation projects.

4. Work collaboratively with project managers, architects, and stakeholders to ensure effective communication, delivery, and governance of technical initiatives.

5. Design, implement, and maintain Exchange On-Prem and Exchange Online environments.

6. Develop and manage hybrid configurations and migration strategies.

7. Administer and optimise Microsoft 365 services (Exchange Online, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, and Compliance Centre).

8. Implement and maintain email security controls (SPF, DKIM, DMARC, anti-spam, DLP, ATP).

9. Ensure service reliability, scalability, performance, and compliance across messaging and collaboration platforms.

10. Provide Tier-3 support and act as as the escalation point for complex technical issues.

11. Deliver engineering level implementation and solution delivery as part of transformation and operational programs.

12. Maintain comprehensive documentation, system diagrams, and technical standards for continuity and governance.

13. Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams on security, networking, and integration.

14. Contribute to strategic roadmap, ensuring alignment with enterprise architecture and continuous improvement goals.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Work Experience

Essential;

• Minimum 5-10 years of experience in enterprise IT infrastructure, messaging, or collaboration roles.
• Demonstrated experience leading and delivering complex Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft 365 and Intune implementation and migration projects.
• Proven track record in design, engineering, and supporting large-scale Exchange Hybrid and Microsoft 365 environments.
• Experience providing Tier-3 technical support, resolving escalated issues, and acting as the technical authority for messaging and collaboration platforms.
• Strong background in project planning, execution and stakeholder management with cross-functional teams.
• Hands-on experience implementing security, compliance, and governance policies within Microsoft 365 (e.g. DLP, retention, conditional access).

Beneficial;

• Experience working in regulated or security-sensitive environments (finance, government, healthcare)
• Exposure to Microsoft Purview for compliance and data protection initiatives.
• Involvement in Zero Trust, modern workplace, or Copilot readiness programs.

• Expert knowledge of Microsoft Exchange Server 2016/2019 administration and troubleshooting.
• Expert knowledge of Exchange Online and Hybrid Deployments, including coexistence, migrations and hybrid mail flow.
• Hands-on expertise with Microsoft Intune / Endpoint Manager for device and application management (MDM/MAM)
• Proficiency in Azure Active Directory, Conditional Access, and Identity Federation (ADFS, Azure AD Connect)
• Advanced PowerShell scripting for automation, reporting, and administration.
• Deep understanding of email security protocols (SPF, DKIM, DMARC, TLS) and anti-spam/anti-phishing controls.
• Solid knowledge of DNS, certificates, and network fundamentals related to messaging and collaboration.
• Hands-on experience with Microsoft Team Voice, including Calling Plans Operator Connect, and Direct Routing.
• Experience with Teams compliance call recording solutions (e.g. Dubber, NTRX or similar vendors).
• Understanding of Session Border Controllers (SBCs) and PSTN integration.
• Knowledge of Teams Voice and Direct Routing solutions.

Beneficial;

• Experience with Exchange Online Protection (EOP) and Microsoft Defender for Office 365.
• Experience with email security gateways such as Forcepoint, Clearswift and Proofpoint.
• Familiarity with Microsoft Purview for compliance, information protection, and data governance.
• Understanding of Microsoft 365 Copilot integrations and readiness within Exchange Online, Teams, and SharePoint.
• Understanding of Zero Trust architecture and Microsoft 365 Security Baselines.
• Experience in SharePoint governance, lifecycle management, and automation.
• Experience working with third-party telephony, call recording, or regulatory compliance vendors.
• Familiarity with telecom migration testing, user readiness, and go-live support.

Education / Qualifications:

Essential;

• Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or equivalent experience.
• Relevant Microsoft certifications, such as:
  • MS-102 - Microsoft 365 Administrator
  • MS-102 - Endpoint Administration
