Engineering Manager, AI Builder Experience

AI frameworks like LangChain, LlamaIndex, and n8n are quickly becoming the default way developers build with AI - and MongoDB wants to be the data platform that shows up everywhere they build. As part of the AI Builders Experience org at MongoDB, we’re forming a brand new engineering team to make that happen, and we're looking for the founding Engineering Manager to hire the team, set the technical direction, and ship integrations into some of the fastest-moving open-source ecosystems in tech.

In this role, you'll be close enough to the code to jump into exploratory work yourself while also building the team, process, and operational rigor to keep a growing integration portfolio healthy long-term. The new team will work mostly in Python and TypeScript while collaborating closely with client library teams and other engineering groups across MongoDB that deliver the underlying driver, platform, and product capabilities needed to support these integrations well. 

You’ll collaborate closely and move quickly with product, partners, field teams, the developer community, and open source project maintainers to ship where demand is real, deepen investment where adoption proves out, and evolve the portfolio over time as it becomes a critical part of MongoDB’s future in AI.

Position expectations

• Work closely with recruiting to hire a team of Python and TypeScript engineers who will build and own MongoDB integrations across a broad AI framework ecosystem that includes technologies like Langchain, LangGraph, LlamaIndex, n8n, and Mastra
• Execute effectively in a fast-moving environment where priorities may shift week to week based on framework changes, customer demand, partner needs, and strategic opportunity. Deliver quickly while keeping a high standard of technical quality
• Flag issues, concerns, and resource needs early, working with management to triage, staff, borrow expertise, and cross-functionally hand off completed projects as needed
• Work closely with product managers, program managers, sales, GTM, and peer engineering teams to define, prioritize, and deliver capabilities that improve the builder experience and strengthen MongoDB’s position in the AI framework ecosystem; help decide where to invest effort and where to pull back
• Manage dependencies on drivers, platform capabilities, and other MongoDB product surfaces required to deliver excellent framework integrations
• Collaborate with external teams who own open source projects MongoDB integrates with, maintaining a high standard of professionalism and courtesy to work effectively through external maintainer review cycles to land high-quality upstream contributions
• Jump in to do initial, exploratory work. Guide key decisions, unblock the team, and contribute when needed as projects grow
• Own the monitoring, operations, maintenance, and ongoing quality of a broad, evolving integration portfolio; develop testing strategy, release readiness, and operational follow-through after launch
• Help the team build and maintain sustainable engineering practices, including CI/CD, automated testing, version compatibility awareness, and strong integration health over time
• Develop a team that stays current with the Python, TypeScript, and broader AI builder ecosystems, including important frameworks, community discussions, and emerging patterns; maintain awareness of trends and discourse in contemporary AI
• Bring a research and discovery mindset to the role, using customer, community, partner, and field signals to help guide roadmap and investment decisions; identify emerging opportunities in the ecosystem and help decide where early investment could create strategic advantage

Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience building developer platforms, libraries, or other high-scale technical systems, with strong proficiency in Python or TypeScript and an ability to lead teams working across both the Python and TypeScript ecosystems. Experience working with programming language polyglot teams is a plus
• 3+ years of experience managing a team of software engineers and providing technical leadership for complex projects or products
• Experience with query optimization (especially MongoDB) and AI coding tools; distributed systems experience would be an asset
• Demonstrated success hiring, mentoring, and growing high-performing engineering teams, including experience supporting career development, feedback, and performance management
• Demonstrated ability to operate effectively in a fast-moving technical landscape with frequent context switching, incomplete information, and competing opportunities, while maintaining sound prioritization and strong judgment
• Strong technical depth in developer-facing software, with the judgment to make and guide architectural trade-offs
• Experience leading the launch of new features or systems and operating them successfully in production after release
• Excellent written and verbal technical communication, with a strong instinct to collaborate across engineering, product, and other stakeholder groups
• A track record of escalating issues early and fostering a team culture that values intellectual honesty and collaboration
• Comfort operating in ambiguous, evolving spaces and helping teams make progress when customer behavior, technical requirements, or ecosystem priorities are still taking shape
• Strong and demonstrated interest in modern AI builder workflows and the developer tooling landscape, ideally with familiarity across frameworks, retrieval patterns, agent workflows, embedding, vector search, or adjacent areas; experience in this area would be an asset
• Experience working with open source software, external ecosystems, or integrations with third-party frameworks and communities, especially in the Python ecosystem; familiarity with open source contribution models, external maintainers, and engineering work that spans company-owned and upstream repositories would be a plus

Success measures

• In the first month, you will understand the team’s scope, the high-level architecture of the platform and integrations, the current portfolio of work, and the key technical and organizational dependencies around the role. You will start building relationships with cross-functional partners, especially recruiting, and develop a hiring plan
• In three months, in collaboration with our recruiting team, you will have a healthy candidate pipeline and the first members of your new team onboarding. You’ll have a hand-off plan with the teams currently owning AI Framework Integrations
• In six months, you will have staffed the core of your team, demonstrated effective partnership with recruiting, taken responsibility for major initiatives in the upcoming quarter, and improved the team’s ability to execute through technical and organizational ambiguity
• In twelve months, you’ll be having active growth conversations with your team members about performance and longer-term career development. You’ll have led the development and operation of multiple meaningful features or integrations and helped shape the forward-looking technical and execution strategy for this area
