The Energy unit delivers services to clients globally across several sectors including hydropower, nuclear, waste, renewable generation and transmission & distribution networks. Together we provide integrated engineering and project management services across the project lifecycle - from concept and design to construction and operations, to decommissioning or repowering and life extension. Together with our clients, we’re helping to deliver the energy transition globally.

Overview of the role

Our Energy Unit's Transmission & Distribution division is growing its Power Systems team and is looking for a Power Systems Engineer to support the delivery of a wide range of power system studies associated with the energy transition.

You will work on projects involving renewable generation, battery energy storage systems (BESS), transmission and distribution networks, and grid connection studies. Working alongside experienced specialists, you will contribute to technical analysis, modelling, study delivery and engineering assessments for projects in the UK and internationally.

This role offers an excellent opportunity to broaden your technical capabilities while working on some of the most significant energy infrastructure projects currently being developed.

Key responsibilities and duties include:

  • Support the delivery of power system studies for transmission and distribution networks
  • Develop and maintain power system models using industry standard software tools
  • Contribute to studies relating to:
    • Load flow analysis
    • Short circuit studies
    • Protection coordination
    • Dynamic and transient stability assessments
    • Grid connection and compliance studies
    • Power quality assessments
  • Analyse data and study outputs, helping to identify practical engineering solutions
  • Prepare technical calculations, reports and engineering documentation
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams across energy projects
  • Engage with clients, network operators and project stakeholders where required
  • Support the continuous improvement of modelling approaches, analysis techniques and engineering standards
  • Keep up to date with developments in power systems, renewable technologies and industry regulations

Candidate specification

Essential:

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline
  • Understanding of power system engineering principles and electricity networks
  • Familiarity with power system analysis and modelling techniques
  • Knowledge of transmission and distribution systems
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and within project teams
  • A desire to continue developing technical knowledge and professional skills within the power systems field

Desirable:

  • Experience using power system analysis software such as ETAP, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, PSS®E or similar packages
  • Exposure to renewable energy, battery storage, HVDC, generation or grid connection projects
  • Understanding of UK Grid Code requirements and power system standards
  • Progress towards professional registration or membership of a recognised engineering institution
