Ko wai mātou | About Us:

At Whaikaha, we want an Aotearoa New Zealand where Deaf and disabled people and tāngata whaikaha Māori are thriving.

As a Ministry we are dedicated to this goal, working with government, businesses, and communities to drive real change.

We do this by investing in disability communities, providing strategic and policy advice across government, monitoring how well services are working, and identifying new, exciting opportunities to make a difference.

We care about the wellbeing and success of our people and provide a supportive and inclusive environment.

Mō te tūnga | About the Role

This is a fixed term opportunity through to August 2027 to play a senior role in developing the data, evidence and insights that support better outcomes for disabled people and tāngata whaikaha Māori.

As Senior Data Analyst, you will lead complex quantitative and qualitative analytical work, develop accessible insights and data products, and provide technical leadership and authoritative advice. You will also help build capability across the team through quality assurance, peer review and mentoring.

A significant part of the role involves strengthening disability data across the wider data system. You will coordinate key disability data advisory groups and the community of practice, and work with government agencies, the disability community, researchers and other partners to improve the quality and use of disability data.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Lead quantitative and qualitative analytical work and integrate evidence from a range of sources to develop insights and advice.
  • Source, analyse and visualise data using analytical methods and tools such as Power BI, Excel, SQL and R.
  • Design and deliver high-quality data products, dashboards, reports, briefings and other analytical outputs for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Provide technical leadership, quality assurance and peer review, and coach and mentor analysts and other kaimahi.
  • Strengthen disability data across Whaikaha and the wider data system by contributing to cross-government initiatives and work to address disability data gaps.
  • Coordinate key disability data advisory groups and community of practice, including facilitating discussions and building strong relationships with members.
  • Lead substantial projects and contribute analytical and technical expertise to priority work programmes across Whaikaha.

Mōu | About You

To undertake this role successfully, you will either be a disabled person, tāngata whaikaha Māori, have lived experience as whānau, or be able to establish credibility and trust with the disability community.

You will bring:

  • Strong quantitative analytical capability and experience working with complex data from a range of sources, alongside experience using qualitative evidence.
  • Advanced experience using analytical and visualisation tools such as R, SQL, Power BI and Excel.
  • Experience leading complex analytical work, exercising sound judgement and turning evidence into clear, accessible insights and advice for a range of audiences.
  • Strong relationship management, facilitation and communication skills, with the ability to build trusted relationships and work effectively across organisational boundaries.
  • Experience providing peer review and quality assurance and coaching and mentoring others to build analytical capability.
  • Knowledge of the disability data system and wider social-sector data environment, or the ability to develop this knowledge quickly.

Experience with, or knowledge of, Stats NZ’s Integrated Data Infrastructure (IDI) is desirable but not essential.
