Software Engineer – API Services, Core Banking

Overview

Join M&T Bank’s API Services organization as a Software Engineer, where you’ll help develop and support the backend services and APIs that connect applications and systems across the Bank. API Services centrally manages APIs used by internal and external teams, enabling applications to access information and capabilities across different banking systems.

In this role, you’ll work with Java, Spring Boot, APIs, and cloud technologies while gaining exposure to a variety of applications and technical partners across the organization. You’ll join a collaborative engineering environment that values problem solving, curiosity, continuous learning, and innovation. The team provides opportunities to build deeper expertise in specific services while developing broader knowledge across related technologies and applications.

Responsible at the proficient level for writing code and the teams' technical requirements gathering. Completes work following banking technology standards and contributes to the overall stability and resiliency of banking technology within the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC).

Primary Responsibilities

• Work within the boundaries of the approved Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) to solve business needs and minimize risks to the Bank through clean and resilient code with guidance as needed.
• Develop, enhance, and support backend applications, APIs, and services supporting the Bank's enterprise API ecosystem.
• Develop and support Java-based applications and services using Spring Boot.
• Build and enhance API-driven solutions and integrations that enable communication between applications and downstream systems.
• Provide feedback in pull requests to other team members.
• Participate in code review by presenting and providing constructive feedback on code quality and improvements with team members.
• Write organized, clean, efficient, and secure source code at proficient level in minimum of one programming language to be verified by a senior team member.
• Utilize source control management tools to organize and maintain code with review from manager for structure and conflict resolution.
• Jointly analyze technical and business requirements for completeness, accuracy, and feasibility with senior team members to ensure accurate scoping of work.
• Troubleshoot and support backend applications, APIs, services, and related technology components across development and production environments.
• Collaborate, document, and communicate technical implementation details clearly and concisely within team on dependent requirements as needed.
• Contribute to application modernization efforts, including the transition and evolution of existing services toward cloud technologies.
• Collaborate with technical teams and partners across the Bank to support integrated applications and services.
• Participate in continuous learning and innovation opportunities, including exposure to emerging technologies and AI-assisted development tools.
• Understand and adhere to the Company’s risk and regulatory standards, policies and controls in accordance with the Company’s Risk Appetite. Identify risk-related issues needing escalation to management.
• Promote an environment that supports a culture of belonging and reflects the M&T Bank brand.
• Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable.
• Complete other related duties as assigned.

Scope of Responsibilities

Works as part of a collaborative software engineering environment supporting applications and services within API Services. Develops proficiency in assigned services and technologies while building broader knowledge across related applications, APIs, and integrated systems.

Supervisory/Managerial Responsibilities

Education and Experience Required

• Associate's degree and a minimum of 3 years’ systems analysis and/ or application development work experience OR Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 1 year systems analysis and/or application development work experience. In lieu of a degree, a combined minimum of 5 years’ education and/or relevant work experience, including a minimum of 1 year of systems analysis and/or application development work experience
• Professional proficiency in a minimum of 1 relevant programming language.
• Experience with Java or a comparable object-oriented programming language.
• Experience with Spring Boot or a comparable application development framework.
• Experience developing or supporting backend applications, APIs, or services.
• Experience with cloud technologies or cloud-based application environments.

Education and Experience Preferred

• A minimum of 3 years of Java development experience.
• A minimum of 3 years of Spring Boot development experience.
• Microsoft Azure experience.
• Experience developing or supporting RESTful APIs and API-driven applications.
• Backend software development experience.
• Experience with cloud application development, cloud migration, or application modernization.
• Experience supporting applications or services that integrate with multiple systems.
• Experience troubleshooting application, API, or service-related issues.
• Experience with C#/.NET or another programming language and application development framework.
• Experience working in a collaborative team environment.
• Experience with AI-assisted software development tools.
• Basic analytical skills specific to application development.
• Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work through unfamiliar or ambiguous technical problems.
• Ability and willingness to learn new technologies and apply new skills in a development environment.

M&T Bank is committed to fair, competitive, and market-informed pay for our employees. The pay range for this position is $80,900.00 - $134,800.00 Annual (USD). The successful candidate’s particular combination of knowledge, skills, and experience will inform their specific compensation.
