Nubank is a Brazilian digital bank founded in 2013 that began by issuing a no-fee purple credit card to customers frustrated by the branch banking oligopoly, and it has grown into one of the largest financial institutions in Latin America by customer count. It now serves well over a hundred million customers across Brazil, Mexico and Colombia with accounts, cards, lending, investments and insurance, operating entirely without branches. Headquartered in São Paulo and listed on the New York Stock Exchange, it was an early Berkshire Hathaway investment and is unusual among digital banks for being consistently profitable at scale.

About the Role

  • Internal Audit helps Nubank grow responsibly by independently assessing whether key risks are identified and managed, controls are working as intended, and important financial processes are reliable.

  • In this role, you will join Internal Audit’s Finance team and work across a broad range of financial topics, including accounting, treasury, credit risk, market and liquidity risk, capital, and topics related to the financial market. You will navigate Nubank’s data environment, connect information across systems and domains, and turn your analysis into clear evidence and insights that support the audit agenda.

  • As part of the Internal Audit, you will work on audits from planning through fieldwork and reporting. This includes understanding processes and controls with stakeholders, identifying risks, designing and executing audit procedures, and documenting your work and conclusions. Data is an important part of the role: you will use it to perform substantive testing, assess control effectiveness, and identify anomalies or emerging risks. You will also contribute to opportunities to strengthen continuous risk monitoring through technology and data-driven approaches.

  • The role calls for a solid understanding of accounting and financial markets, including how financial institutions operate and how their activities are reflected in their accounts and risk management. You will work closely with auditees and teammates, bringing clear and constructive communication.

  • This role is based in São Paulo, Brazil, with in-office presence at HQ1 on Mondays and Thursdays. The team currently supports audits in Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, and the United States, so English communication will be important.

You’ll be Responsible for

  • Navigate Nubank’s data environment to understand how relevant information is generated, stored, and used across systems, and apply that understanding to design and execute robust audit procedures. You should be comfortable working with data from the start and willing to use programming and available AI tools to support your work.

  • Apply your understanding of accounting and how financial institutions operate, including how their activities affect accounting records, to assess risks and controls in context.

  • Perform audits across financial processes and topics such as accounting, treasury, credit risk, market and liquidity risk, capital, and models, assessing process risks, data quality, and the design and operating effectiveness of controls.

  • Participate in walkthroughs with auditees to map processes and controls, identify risks, and help shape audit plans with support from the project leader.

  • Execute control tests, including design and operating-effectiveness testing, and data-driven substantive tests.

  • Produce clear, traceable audit workpapers that connect the risk being assessed, the procedures performed, the evidence obtained, and the conclusions reached.

  • Communicate potential issues early and constructively, that are grounded in reliable evidence, and help stakeholders make informed decisions about financial and control risks.

  • Build collaborative relationships across Internal Audit and the business, communicate clearly and respectfully, and adapt to different stakeholders, processes, and audit assignments.

  • Support audits across geographies as the team’s work expands beyond Brazil, communicating in English in writing and in conversations.

  • Use technology to help Internal Audit identify patterns, exceptions, and potential risks.

  • Contribute to data-driven routines, indicators, and automated tests that can support continuous auditing and ongoing and predictive monitoring of relevant risks and controls. Check out our blog post: Reinventing Internal Audit by Embracing Technology.

What We're Looking For Someone Who Has

  • A solid foundation in accounting and financial markets, including an understanding of how financial institutions operate, how their chart of accounts is structured, and how their activities are reflected in accounting records.

  • Data literacy and ability to navigate complex data environments.

  • Knowledge of Scala, SQL, Python, or another programming language, and the ability to use them to explore and validate complex data.

  • Proficient in risk management strategies.

  • Clear, constructive communication and the ability to build collaborative relationships with auditees and teammates.

  • Problem-solving skills, coupled with effective communication capabilities.

  • Experience at a bank, fintech, payment institution, investment fund, insurer, or financial services audit practice is required.

  • Be comfortable speaking with an English-speaking audience.
