About the project

Pregnancy-associated anemia is a pressing global public health issue, especially prevalent in South Asia, where it plays a significant role in maternal mortality, contributing to nearly half of all maternal deaths. In India, the burden of maternal anemia is particularly severe, with more than half of pregnant women affected. Anemia during pregnancy not only increases the risk of maternal morbidity and mortality but also jeopardizes the health and survival of newborns.

The Maternal Anemia Project, with a specific focus on the states of Meghalaya, is designed to tackle this critical issue by reducing the incidence of moderate and severe anemia among pregnant and lactating women (PLWs). The project involves a multi-faceted approach that works in close collaboration with state and district-level government authorities to ensure targeted, sustainable interventions. The successful reduction of maternal anemia through this project has the potential to significantly lower the rates of maternal and newborn morbidity and mortality. Healthier mothers are more likely to have safer pregnancies and healthier babies, thereby contributing to overall improvements in maternal and child health outcomes in the target regions.
