We are seeking an experienced Senior Applications Architect to lead the specification, design, and integration of robust application architectures within complex, distributed environments. In this role, you will define the overall structure, logical components, interface boundaries, and interactions among software layers, databases, and middleware systems. Leveraging industry-standard architecture frameworks such as TOGAF ADM or Zachman, along with modeling notations like ArchiMate and UML, you will develop target solution architectures, evaluate reusable components, establish enterprise integration patterns, and create comprehensive architectural blueprints that guide development and modernization efforts.
Location: Toronto, ON (Hybrid – 3 days/week onsite)
Duration: 6-month contract (Possibility of extension)
Advantages
Architectural Leadership: Direct the application architecture for complex, large-scale distributed systems.
Modern Integration Scope: Shape diverse integration models spanning APIs, SOA, ESB, and asynchronous data flows.
Standard-Driven Delivery: Apply recognized frameworks like TOGAF ADM, ArchiMate, and UML using modern modeling tools.
Flexible Hybrid Model: Balance independent remote productivity with collaborative onsite days in Toronto.
Responsibilities
Lead the design, specification, and implementation of end-to-end application architectures across large-scale, distributed enterprise environments.
Define structural components, software layering, interface specifications, and interactions between applications, databases, and middleware systems.
Develop current-state architectures, target solution blueprints, transition roadmaps, and architecture governance artifacts using tools such as Enterprise Architect (EA Sparx) or Archi.
Model business, application, and data interactions using ArchiMate and UML standards within a collaborative team environment.
Design and implement enterprise integration strategies, encompassing REST APIs, web services, Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), Enterprise Service Bus (ESB), real-time messaging, and batch processing.
Identify and evaluate reusable components, service abstractions, and quality-of-service metrics to improve system scalability and maintainability.
Define technical constraints, coding standards, and architectural guardrails for engineering squads and implementation teams.
Collaborate with enterprise architects, solution designers, infrastructure specialists, and project managers to align technical designs with corporate standards and cloud strategies.
Conduct architecture reviews, gap analyses, and technical risk assessments across multi-tier application platforms.
Qualifications
Application Architecture Seniority: Minimum of 6 years of hands-on experience in the development and implementation of enterprise application architectures (Strictly Required).
Systems Analysis & Design: Extensive experience conducting systems analysis and technical design within large, multi-tier systems environments (Strictly Required).
Architecture Frameworks: Strong working knowledge of enterprise architecture frameworks, preferably TOGAF ADM or Zachman, across business, information, application, technology, and security domains (Strictly Required).
Architecture Modeling Tools & Standards: Practical hands-on experience using architecture modeling tools (e.g., Enterprise Architect / Sparx EA, Archi, or equivalent) utilizing ArchiMate and/or UML notations in a collaborative setting (Strictly Required).
Integration Patterns & Middleware: In-depth knowledge and practical design experience across multiple integration models, including APIs, REST/SOAP web services, SOA, ESB implementations, hub-and-spoke, real-time, and batch-oriented data exchange (Strictly Required).
Nice-to-Have Assets:
Prior application architecture experience within a public sector or equivalent large-scale enterprise environment.
Experience delivering enterprise architecture artifacts aligned with formal public sector architecture review and checkpoint processes.
Hands-on knowledge of cloud computing platforms and hybrid on-premises/cloud integration architectures.
