Position Summary
Red Cat Holding is looking for a motivated Software Engineer Intern to support our engineering team working on the ground control station experience for our drone platforms. This is a hands-on opportunity to learn real-world software engineering - including C++, Android development, and real-time systems - while contributing to features used in actual drone missions.
You'll work alongside experienced engineers on problems like: how do you keep a live data connection stable between a drone and a tablet? How do you debug an app that's running slow or crashing? How do you build something that has to work reliably in the field, not just in a lab?
No prior drone or aerospace experience needed - we're looking for strong fundamentals and curiosity, with mentorship built in.
What You'll Do
Assist in building and testing features for our Android-based ground control application, under the guidance of senior engineers
Help debug issues in native C++ code, Android apps, or communication between the two
Learn how drones and ground control software communicate in real time (MAVLink protocol, networking basics)
Support testing and validation of new features, including field-testing support when available
Contribute to build tooling, documentation, or automation tasks as needed
Participate in code reviews and team discussions to build good engineering habits early
What We're Looking For
Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field
Coursework or personal projects involving C++ (Java/Kotlin, Python, or other languages also valued)
Strong problem-solving and debugging instincts - comfortable digging into why something isn't working
Genuine interest in robotics, drones, or real-time/embedded systems
Comfortable working in a Linux-based development environment (or willing to learn quickly)
Nice to Have (not required)
Exposure to Android development or mobile app projects
Familiarity with Qt/QML or other UI frameworks
Interest in networking, hardware interfaces, or systems programming
Any personal or academic project involving drones, robotics, or embedded systems
Working Conditions
Primarily computer-based work in an office/lab environment
Occasional participation in field testing or facility walk-throughs may be available for hands-on exposure
Background Check
This position will require successfully completing a post-offer background check. Qualified candidates with a criminal history will be considered and are not automatically disqualified, consistent with federal and state law.
