Position Summary
Red Cat is seeking an Electrical Engineer Intern to join our team. We are a dynamic and growing drone technology company focused on manufacturing UAS platforms for defense, public safety, and other government security organizations.
This internship offers hands-on exposure to how next-generation eVTOL drones are designed, built, and validated - from RF and power systems to embedded motor control. You'll work alongside experienced engineers and get real exposure across the electrical stack, with mentorship built in.
What You'll Do
- Assist with schematics, layout, and bring-up support for ongoing projects
- Support the design, simulation, or debugging of RF front ends under engineer guidance
- Help with power tree analysis and basic power integrity concepts
- Gain exposure to motor control fundamentals (BLDC/PMSM, FOC or trapezoidal control)
- Assist with embedded C/C++ firmware tasks for real-time control, drivers, or diagnostics
- Support PCB layout work, learning constraints around signal integrity, power integrity, and RF considerations
- Help plan or execute test campaigns using lab equipment (oscilloscope, spectrum analyzer, VNA, etc.)
- Gain exposure to Battery Management System (BMS) concepts - cell balancing, protection, thermal management
- Contribute to documentation such as design notes or test reports
- Collaborate with mechanical, firmware, and manufacturing teams on design discussions
What We're Looking For
- Currently pursuing a BS or MS in Electrical Engineering or a related field
- Coursework or project experience in at least one of: RF, BMS, PCB layout, power systems, embedded systems, or motor control
- Comfortable with (or eager to learn) test equipment like multimeters, oscilloscopes, or signal generators
- Exposure to tools such as Altium, MATLAB/Python, or SPICE through coursework or personal projects
- Strong communication skills and ability to explain technical thinking clearly
- Genuine curiosity about hardware and how electrical systems come together in real products
Nice to Have (not required)
- Interest in antenna design, RF testing, or link budgets
- Exposure to power electronics (buck/boost converters, gate drivers, battery systems)
- Familiarity with high-speed PCB layout concepts
- Interest in embedded systems, RTOS, or motor control libraries
- Any personal or academic project involving robotics, drones, or electromechanical systems
Working Conditions
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds
- Ability to stand, walk, and move between lab, office, and manufacturing environments for extended periods
- Manual dexterity for handling tools, components, and test equipment
- Comfortable working in environments that may involve vibration, noise, or temperature variations related to testing
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) when required
