We are looking for a Press Officer to join our busy team and maintain The Lancet Group’s reputation as a prestigious home for the world’s best science. This is an exciting opportunity for an early-career communications professional to develop their expertise in media relations within a highly respected international scientific publishing environment. The role is varied, covering every area of media relations, working internationally and across all kinds of health research, covering our portfolio of 30 journals.

We are looking for a Press Officer to join our busy team and maintain The Lancet Group’s reputation as a prestigious home for the world’s best science. This is a varied role covering every area of media relations, working internationally, and across all kinds of health research, covering our portfolio of 30 journals.

About the team

You will join a team of dedicated media professionals who work across all 30 Lancet journals to seek out the most newsworthy science and promote it to journalists in a variety of ways. You will work with leading researchers and journalists around the world, as well as collaborating with our expert editors. You will play a key role, as part of the wider communications team, in maintaining The Lancet Group’s reputation for excellence, and for ensuring our high-profile research receives high quality, accurate media coverage.

You will be joining the wider Lancet Communications team, with colleagues based internationally in London (UK) and Philadelphia (US) covering social media, website and internal communications, working closely with our multimedia and marketing teams. You will work closely with our European editors and colleagues across the business based in Amsterdam.

The role is based in Amsterdam, and you will be expected to work from the office at least once a week. There will be occasionally travel to London to meet colleagues in the wider team.

About the role

  • As Press Officer you will be skilled in spotting newsworthy research, identifying the story, and finding the best way to tell it to achieve accurate, high quality media coverage;
  • Managing multiple papers and deadlines, you will have excellent project management and teamwork skills, collaborating with the wider communications, editorial and productions teams at The Lancet Group, as well as with authors and their comms teams. You will have creative ideas for how to promote our research to the media;
  • You will be skilled in quickly identifying risks to The Lancet’s reputation, and proactive in suggesting solutions to help handle them effectively;
  • Working in a busy press office, you’ll be able to prioritise and have a calm approach, while continuously offering excellent service to our editors and authors.

Responsibilities

  • Reviewing papers and working with our editors to identify newsworthy research, and identifying the best way to share the story to the media - including researching and pitching to relevant reporters, writing clear and engaging press releases or media summaries;
  • Supporting the media approach for our major reports and papers by understanding the report’s aims and key messages and suggesting and delivering media tactics to support these;
  • Identifying and helping to handle reputational issues, including cautiously navigating contentious research papers to ensure that they are presented clearly and accurately to journalists, and clearly communicated via our channels;
  • Managing our press release distribution platform and media database, and providing regular coverage reports and analysis;
  • Monitoring the Press Office inbox and responding promptly to journalists’ requests, and supporting external communications teams with their media plans.

Requirements

  • Interest or experience in communications, public relations, media relations;
  • Interest in health and science or a related degree/qualification in a scientific/health field;
  • Team player with a collaborative approach, ready to fit into our small, supportive, and global team;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Highly organised and methodical, being able to juggle a busy workload while providing excellent services to authors and journalists;
  • Dedicated and determined to achieve great media results.

Primary Location Base Pay Range: NLD Amsterdam (Radarweg) €49,000 - €81,700. This role is covered by the Collective Labor Agreement Publishing Industry.
