Rio Tinto is a mining group founded in 1873 when investors bought a copper mine in southern Spain, and it now operates as a dual-listed company with corporate offices in London and Melbourne. Its largest business by far is iron ore from the Pilbara region of Western Australia, an integrated system of mines, rail and ports that supplies Chinese steelmaking, followed by aluminium, copper from Oyu Tolgoi in Mongolia and Kennecott in Utah, and industrial minerals including borates and titanium dioxide. The group has moved into battery materials through lithium assets in Argentina and the acquisition of Arcadium, while working to decarbonise aluminium smelting.
  • Improve fixed plant reliability by applying engineering insight, defect elimination and practical maintenance solutions.
  • Build technical influence across asset health, shutdown support, root cause analysis and continuous improvement.
  • Live and work in Pannawonica, supporting a residential Pilbara operation and its local community or FIFO from Perth to Pannawonica 8 days on 6 days off.

We’re Finding Better Ways™ to provide materials the world needs, now and in the future. Our values - care, courage and curiosity - guide how we work and how we treat each other.

About the role

We are looking for an Engineer Maintenance to provide technical assistance, support and expert advice on maintenance and continuous improvement. Reporting to the Superintendent Planning & Engineering, you will work across fixed plant assets to improve maintainability, reliability and asset performance. You will support maintenance teams with planning, defect elimination, root cause analysis, shutdowns and asset recovery, while translating asset condition and performance information into practical maintenance strategies.

This is a great opportunity for an engineer who enjoys solving equipment problems, working closely with maintenance teams and developing sustainable improvements that reduce risk and improve operational performance.

What you’ll be doing

Reporting to the Superintendent Planning & Engineering and working with maintenance, asset health, planning and operational teams, you will:

  • Provide technical support to maintenance teams for fixed plant assets, including planned work, shutdowns and breakdown response.
  • Analyse equipment failures and complete root cause investigations, recommending and tracking corrective actions.
  • Review asset condition, defects and performance data to prioritise maintenance and reliability improvements.
  • Develop and improve maintenance strategies, tactics and work scopes using risk, cost and asset criticality information.
  • Lead maintainability and continuous improvement initiatives that improve safety, reliability and cost performance.
  • Support asset recovery activities and the return of equipment to a safe, functional state.
  • Provide engineering input to minor projects, repair scopes and replacement decisions.
  • Coach maintenance personnel and support consistent application of work management and quality assurance processes.

About you

We’re looking for someone whose experience aligns with the key requirements below. You do not need to meet every “helpful for success” item to apply. If you bring relevant experience and are excited by the opportunity, we encourage you to submit an application.

Required for Success

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team.
  • A bachelor’s degree in engineering in a relevant discipline, or equivalent technical experience.
  • Experience in maintenance engineering, reliability engineering or fixed plant asset management in mining or another safety-critical industrial environment.
  • Experience applying root cause analysis, defect elimination and continuous improvement methods.
  • Ability to interpret asset condition, cost, risk and performance information to develop practical maintenance recommendations.
  • Working knowledge of SAP or a comparable computerised maintenance management system.

Helpful for Success

  • Experience with maintenance strategy development, shutdown support, asset recovery or minor capital projects.
  • Knowledge of Lean Six Sigma or another structured improvement methodology.
  • Experience working with fixed plant, heavy mobile equipment or process engineering stakeholders.

What we offer

Be recognised for your contribution, your thinking and your hard work, and go home knowing you’ve helped the world progress.

  • A work environment where safety is always the number one priority
  • A permanent position working directly for Rio Tinto
  • A competitive base salary reflective of your skills and experience with annual incentive program
  • Comprehensive medical benefits including subsidised private health insurance for employees and immediate family
  • Attractive share ownership plan
  • Company provided insurance cover
  • Extensive salary sacrifice and salary packaging options
  • Career development and education assistance to further your technical or leadership ambitions
  • Ongoing access to family-friendly health and medical wellbeing support
  • Leave for all of life’s reasons (vacation/annual, paid parental, personal and cultural leave)
  • Exclusive employee discounts (banking, accommodation, cars, retail and more)
  • Possible domestic relocation assistance

Where you’ll be working

Located in the scenic Pilbara region and close to the major centre of Karratha, this vibrant town offers a sought-after lifestyle and affordable living in comfortable subsidised housing.

This is a great opportunity for you and your family to contribute to a unique community and enjoy a wide range of seasonal outdoor activities; allowing you to find the perfect balance between leisure and work.

The town of Pannawonica is supported by a resident doctor, an excellent primary school with options to undertake secondary school studies in a supervised distance education program, supermarket, and a local community gym and youth centre.
