The MTEM Gage Calibration Laboratory provides calibration services for the mechanical and physical measurement instruments that support critical engineering, manufacturing, and test operations. We are seeking a Senior Metrology Engineer to provide technical leadership for calibration processes, measurement uncertainty analysis, decision rules, accreditation activities, and overall laboratory metrology practices.

In this role, you will collaborate across engineering, quality, operations, and program teams to ensure calibration activities meet safety, quality, schedule, and compliance requirements. You will also identify and implement continuous improvement opportunities that enhance laboratory capability, efficiency, and technical rigor.

The MTEM department supports more than 450 test platforms and works closely with engineering and operations organizations across the business. This is a full-time onsite position located in Andover, MA.

What You Will Do

  • Calibration procedures. Author, validate and maintain procedures across the laboratory’s mechanical, physical, and dimensional parameters - method selection, validation evidence, and records that hold up under assessment.
  • Provide technical guidance and troubleshooting support to technicians and junior engineers regarding calibration setup, methodology, and measurement best practices.
  • Develop and maintain measurement uncertainty budgets by defining measurement models, evaluating Type A and Type B contributions, and applying GUM or Monte Carlo methods as appropriate.
  • Establish, document, and defend decision rules and guard-banding methodologies, including evaluation of false-acceptance risk and customer requirements.
  • Lead expansion and maintenance of the laboratory's ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation scope, including development of CMCs and supporting technical evidence.
  • Establish calibration intervals using technical data and risk-based methodologies, and serve as a technical escalation point for disputed calibration results.
  • Provide timely communication and coordination with leadership and stakeholders across all shifts.

Qualifications You Must Have

  • Typically requires a Bachelor's degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) and a minimum X years of prior relevant experience.
  • ASQ CCT or CQE Certification
  • Working command of geometric specification per ASME Y14.5 and of engineering drawing and documentation practice per ASME Y14.100.
  • Experience developing calibration procedures and measurement uncertainty budgets that have successfully supported accreditation assessments.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required. U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.

Qualifications We Prefer

  • Hands-on Zeiss CMM work, including CALYPSO measurement-plan development - alignment and datum strategy, sampling and filter selection, fitting algorithm choice - and task-specific uncertainty for a plan (ISO 15530-3 substitution, simulation, or an equivalent defensible method).
  • Demonstrated expertise in ISO/IEC 17025:2017, ANSI/NCSL Z540-1, ANSI/NCSLI Z540.3, the VIM, and the GUM.
  • Experience with automated calibration systems (i.e. Fluke Metcal, Keysight TME, etc).
  • Experience mentoring or formal training of technicians and junior engineers.
  • Active participation in NCSL International, the Measurement Science Conference, or an equivalent professional community; assessor training under A2LA, NVLAP or ANAB.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and substantiate technical perspectives with peers and communicate complex metrology concepts effectively to leadership audiences.

What We Offer

  • Our values drive our actions, behaviors, and performance with a vision for a safer, more connected world. At RTX we value: Safety, Trust, Respect, Accountability, Collaboration, and Innovation.
  • Relocation assistance is not available
