About the project
We are looking for a Middle or Senior Ruby Full-Stack Engineer to join Softjourn's internal talent pool. The engagement can be part-time, with potential to grow to full-time, for temporary or permanent assignments. This search is not tied to a single project. The engineer may join any of our Ruby on Rails engagements, which typically include:
-fintech and payment platforms, such as accounts receivable automation and payment gateway integrations;
-ticketing and event platforms, covering ticket sales, discovery, scanning, access control applications and organiser reporting;
-modernization of complex legacy Rails products, including refactoring, performance work, and migration.
Typical stack: Ruby on Rails, PostgreSQL/MySQL, Redis, Sidekiq, React, RSpec, Docker, AWS and GitHub Actions. The candidate will work in distributed teams with PMs, BAs, QA, DevOps, Solution Architects, and client stakeholders.
Requirements:
- 3+ years of commercial experience with Ruby on Rails (5+ years for Senior), including Ruby 3.x and Rails 6/7+. Experience with both legacy and modern codebases is a plus.
- Strong knowledge of PostgreSQL and/or MySQL, including data modeling, migrations, indexing, and query optimization.
- Experience with background jobs (e.g. Sidekiq) and caching (Redis).
- Experience building RESTful APIs and integrating third-party services and APIs.
- Solid JavaScript, HTML, and CSS skills. Experience with React, Hotwire (Turbo/Stimulus), or server-rendered templates (ERB/Slim/HAML).
- Hands-on experience with RSpec (plus FactoryBot and Capybara) and a habit of keeping test coverage meaningful.
- Practical use of AI-assisted development tools (GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, Cursor) or building AI-powered features via APIs.
- Proactive, responsible, and comfortable with ambiguity. The candidate can analyse and estimate requirements and work effectively in distributed international teams.
- English level: B2+.
Nice to have:
- Applied knowledge of OOP, SOLID, MVC and design patterns. Experience with linters (RuboCop) and code reviews, both giving and receiving.
- Experience in payments or fintech, such as payment gateway integration (Stripe or similar), merchant processing, or Ticketing domain experience, also counts.
- AWS-hosted environments and CI/CD pipelines.
- Experience with code audits: static analysis tools, dependency vulnerability scanning, and producing a technical debt assessment and remediation plan.
