FINANCE ANALYST

About the Role

Sparkfund prices and structures its Distributed Capacity Procurement deals using a set of programmatic pricing models, and this role is responsible for both sides of that work: building the ad hoc project finance models a deal needs when it falls outside the existing templates, and keeping the standing programmatic models accurate as cost, revenue, timing, and financing assumptions shift. You'll work from our existing model library, but you'll also be expected to build new models from scratch when a deal structure calls for something the templates don't cover. 

The work sits between Finance and the teams closest to the deals. You will partner with Business Development, Program, and Project teams to source the assumptions that feed a model, test them against the underlying data, and flag anything that doesn't hold up before it reaches a pricing output. You will also translate model output into language deal teams can use when they negotiate. You will report to the Director of Corporate Finance. Success in this role looks like a maintained set of pricing models that are accurate and able tohold up under review from Finance leadership and deal counterparts.

What You'll Do

Pricing and Financial Modeling

• Build, audit, and maintain the programmatic pricing models used to structure and price deals across Sparkfund's DCP programs
• Update and refine existing models as program economics, deal structures, or market conditions change
• Build bespoke financial models for one-off pricing structures or deal structures that fall outside existing templates

Cross-Functional Assumption Validation

• Partner with Business Development, Program, and Project teams to source the cost, revenue, timing, and financing assumptions that feed pricing models
• Validate assumptions against underlying source data and flag discrepancies before they reach a pricing output
• Translate model outputs into terms non-finance stakeholders can use to structure and negotiate deals

What We're Looking For

• 1-3 years of experience in financial modeling, corporate finance, or a related quantitative role
• Strong technical modeling skills, including building, auditing, and troubleshooting complex Excel models from scratch
• Working knowledge of DCF analysis, capital stack construction (debt, equity, mezzanine), and discount rate and cost of capital concepts, with fluency in IRR, NPV, and other return metrics used to evaluate deal economics
• Strong attention to detail and comfort validating assumptions across multiple sources
• Clear written and verbal communication, including the ability to translate model output for people who don't work in finance
• Bachelor's degree in finance, economics, or another quantitative field, or equivalent practical experience

Nice to Have

• Familiarity with project finance structures or energy asset modeling
• Experience in infrastructure, energy, or utility-facing businesses
• Experience building models that support live deal negotiations

What Will Help You Succeed

• Analytical rigor: You build models and analyses that hold up under review. You check your work before you share it and you catch inconsistencies in the data underneath.
• Assumption validation: You are comfortable going to other teams for the inputs you need, pressure-testing what you get back, and raising a discrepancy before it lands in a pricing output.
• Communication clarity: You can walk someone outside Finance through what a model says and what it means for a decision they need to make.
• Reliability: You deliver recurring work on time and raise a risk to a deadline early rather than at the deadline.

Compensation

The expected base pay range for this role is $81,000-$125,000 per year. This range reflects the span of base pay across the geographic markets where Sparkfund hires for this role, and the range applicable to a given candidate will depend on where they are located. For candidates based in New York City, the expected base pay range is $101,000-$125,000 per year.

Individual placement within the range depends on work location, prior experience, technical capabilities, core competencies, positional scope, internal alignment, and other relevant business factors.

Where applicable, this position may also be eligible for discretionary bonus or incentive compensation. Any such compensation is separate from base salary and is not guaranteed. Eligibility, amounts, and payment are subject to applicable plan terms, company performance, individual performance, and other business considerations.

Work Environment

Sparkfund is a remote-first company with a distributed workforce and emerging hub offices in Denver, Minneapolis, and Washington, DC. This role is performed remotely with occasional travel for team meetings, company gatherings, and other business needs. We are open to candidates anywhere in the United States where Sparkfund is registered to employ, with a preference for candidates in the New York City metro area or elsewhere on the East Coast for time zone overlap with the Finance and deal teams.
