About Us

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters!

Description of Work

Reporting to Correctional Lieutenant I at a minimum custody female correctional facility, this position's primary responsibility is to supervise Correctional Officers. Other job responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Supervising Correctional Officers, assisting with planning work schedules, assigning posts and the responsibilities for the Correctional Officer’s activities relating to the custody and welfare of offenders in a state correctional facility.

2. Assisting and instructing Correctional Officers in the performance of their duties and completing performance evaluations.

3. Disseminating and interpreting to Correctional Officers and offenders the Department of Adult Correction's policies and procedures.

4. Making frequent tours and inspections to ascertain that Correctional Officers are alert, that discipline is being maintained and that assignments are being carried out.

5. Supervising offender counts and maintenance of all records so that offenders may be accounted for at all times.

6. Supervising periodic search of offender quarters for contraband.

7. Conducting investigations and developing prisons operational, emergency plans and post orders.

8. Being subject to rotate to various duty assignments and perform other duties relative to the defined level of work described.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the Minimum Education and Experience listed on the vacancy announcement. The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/Management Preferences are not required but applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:

  • Documented knowledge of Prison Policies and Procedures, and/or Facility Operations.

Salary Range: $37,377 - $65,408

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week). The selected candidate may be selected to work any shift and will work weekends and holidays to ensure 24/7 staff coverage.

About Western Correctional Center for Women (WCCW)

Western Correctional Center for Women (formerly Swannanoa Correctional Center for Women) opened on July 7, 2008, and is a minimum custody facility housing approx. 360 female offenders located in Black Mountain, NC. WCCW renovated four dormitories: Greenwood, Frye, Sloop and Gilliat. Renovations on the vocation building provided offenders with an educational classroom and an operating greenhouse. Renovations to the Buchanan building accommodated the increasing offender population and offer more educational classrooms and a medical wing. On Oct. 4, 2021, the facility's name was changed to Western Correctional Center for Women.
