Engineering Manager - Templating

About the role
You’ll lead a team of around 10 engineers in our Templating Domain and report directly to the VP of Software Engineering. This is a remote role based in South Africa, with the option to work from our Cape Town office. We care more about impact than hours at a desk. There’s also a clear growth path from here, including the opportunity to progress toward a Group Engineering Manager role.
About the team
The Templating Domain sits at the heart of Storyteq’s Creative Automation platform and is a key driver of customer value, powering how global brands create, personalize, and generate assets at scale. It’s one of Storyteq’s core product areas, covering everything from template authoring to asset generation and rendering. The team builds and maintains the tools our customers use to create templates plus the platform experience for configuring those templates and generating finished assets from them at scale.
About the job
This isn’t a hands-on coding role, but it is a highly technical one. We’re looking for a manager who stays close to the architecture, technical decisions, and operational challenges of the systems their team owns. You should be comfortable participating in design reviews, incident discussions, and technical decision-making, while providing clear technical leadership and coaching to engineers. AI is changing how software is built and how our products evolve. We want someone who can help teams adopt these capabilities thoughtfully, focusing on practical value rather than trends.
Key responsibilities
- Lead, coach, and grow a high-performing engineering team, owning hiring, onboarding, and team structure as the domain scales.
- Provide technical leadership across architecture, engineering practices, and operational excellence.
- Partner with Product and Design to define priorities and deliver business impact.
- Own delivery, quality, reliability, and the long-term health of the domain.
- Drive technical direction and architectural decisions, balancing speed, scalability, and maintainability.
- Remove obstacles, support engineers, and foster a high-ownership engineering culture.
- Champion the pragmatic adoption of AI across engineering and product development.
- Collaborate with adjacent teams to deliver seamless end-to-end experiences.
- Lead production incident management and continuous improvement initiatives.
Requirements
- 2+ years of experience as a Lead and/or Engineering Manager, managing a team of 5+ engineers, including remote team members.
- A strong software engineering background, ideally in a B2B SaaS environment, with the ability to guide technical decisions and support engineers on complex challenges.
- Experience working with modern web technologies. Our primary stack is TypeScript (Node.js and Vue.js), with Python used for AI-related development.
- A hands-on leadership style, staying close to the technology and the challenges your team faces.
- A pragmatic approach to AI and experience helping teams adopt new technologies where they deliver real value.
- Experience building and operating customer-facing software products with architectural and operational complexity.
- The ability to balance feature delivery, technical debt, and platform investments.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to represent technical decisions and trade-offs to a broad set of stakeholders.
- A passion for coaching, developing, and growing engineers while fostering a collaborative, high-performing team culture.
