Superhuman is an American software company known for Superhuman Mail, a keyboard-driven email client for Gmail and Outlook that uses AI to draft, triage and summarise messages. In 2025 it was acquired by Grammarly, which then adopted the Superhuman name for the combined company covering the Grammarly writing assistant, the Coda workspace and Superhuman Mail. The company is headquartered in San Francisco, California, United States.

Superhuman offers a dynamic hybrid working model for this role. This flexible approach gives team members the best of both worlds: plenty of focus time along with in-person collaboration that helps foster trust, innovation, and a strong team culture.

The Opportunity

We’re looking for an Engineering Manager to lead our Developer Experience/Release Engineering team in Berlin. You will own how code travels from a developer’s commit to millions of users across Superhuman’s products: Grammarly, Superhuman Docs, and Superhuman Mail.

As our product suite grows, so do the number of engineers contributing to it and the number of surfaces we release on (web, desktop, mobile, browser extensions, APIs). Our team makes shipping fast, safe, and boring. The team builds and runs the CI/CD platform, release pipelines, and rollout tooling that let product teams deploy many times a day with confidence; it enables engineers to be productive, use new technologies to optimize the SLDC, and push on green many times a day.

You will lead a team of engineers working at the intersection of developer productivity, infrastructure, and reliability. You will partner with Product Engineering, SRE, Platform/Infrastructure, and Security to increase release speed and safety. This role is hands-on: you will help set the technical direction and stay close to the work.

As an Engineering Manager, Release Engineering, you will:

  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of Engineers; hire great people and build a strong, inclusive team culture in Berlin and across a distributed organization.

  • Own the strategy and roadmap for CI/CD, build, and release systems that scale with company growth and the number of products and surfaces we ship.

  • Drive faster, safer delivery: improve lead time, deployment frequency, change failure rate, and time to restore, and make these measures visible to engineering leadership.

  • Build and operate release tooling, including progressive rollouts, canaries, feature flags, automated rollback, and release health monitoring.

  • Coordinate release trains and launches across all our products, working with Product, QA, Support, and Marketing to ensure major launches land smoothly.

  • Partner with SRE, Infrastructure, and Security to keep the delivery platform reliable and compliant, including supply chain security, artifact integrity, and access controls.

  • Reduce friction for product engineers: cut build and test times, eliminate flaky tests and pipelines, and offer self-service paths so teams can ship without waiting on us.

  • Act as an escalation point and Incident Commander for release-related incidents, and lead blameless postmortems that turn into lasting fixes.

  • Balance near-term pipeline fixes with foundational investments, and make clear tradeoffs in a fast-moving environment.

  • Stay hands-on where it matters: review designs, help debug tough pipeline problems, and set a high engineering bar.

Qualifications

  • Have 5+ years of software, DevOps, or release/build engineering experience, and 2+ years managing engineers (or engineering managers) with a record of hiring, developing, and retaining talent.

  • Bring hands-on depth in CI/CD systems and build tooling (for example, GitHub Actions, Jenkins, Buildkite, Bazel, or similar) and can reason independently about pipeline architecture and trade-offs.

  • Know cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and Kubernetes or another container orchestration system.

  • Have shipped and operated release systems at scale, using progressive delivery, feature flags, canary releases, and safe rollback.

  • Understand release practices across multiple surfaces (web, desktop, mobile, browser extensions, or backend services).

  • Know infrastructure as code (eg Terraform) and observability tooling, and use delivery metrics (DORA) to guide decisions.

  • Have experience as an Incident Commander and running blameless postmortems.

  • Know the basics of software supply chain security: dependency management, artifact signing, and secrets handling.

  • Have experience managing people in a distributed or remote setting, and can collaborate effectively with Product, SRE, Security, QA, and Support.

  • Operate well in ambiguity, set a high engineering bar, and empower senior engineers to own technical decisions.

  • Has a demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal guidance, proactively manages tasks and priorities across multiple projects, analyzes and executes work efficiently, collaborates effectively with cross-functional teams, and thrives in fast-paced, results-driven environments.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Professional growth: We believe that autonomy and trust are key to empowering our team members to do their best, most innovative work in a way that aligns with their interests, talents, and well-being. We also support professional development and advancement with training, coaching, and regular feedback.

  • A connected team: Superhuman builds a product that helps people connect, and we apply this mindset to our own team. Our remote-first hybrid model enables a highly collaborative culture supported by our values. We work to foster belonging among team members in a variety of ways. This includes our employee resource groups, Superhuman Circles, which promote connection among those with shared identities including BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ team members, women, and parents. We also celebrate our colleagues and accomplishments with global, local, and team-specific programs.

  • Comprehensive benefits for candidates based in Germany: Superhuman offers all team members competitive pay along with a benefits package encompassing life care (including mental health care and risk benefits) and ample and defined time off. We also offer support to set up a home office, wellness and pet care stipends, learning and development opportunities, and more.

  • Relocation Support: Superhuman provides relocation support to make your move to Berlin seamless. Our package includes visa assistance, destination services to help you and your family settle in comfortably, and a relocation bonus to cover additional expenses, such as temporary housing.
