Agentic Design Lead

The Agentic Design Lead is a senior, judgment-driven role responsible for shaping how agentic systems are designed, evaluated, and adopted. It sits at the intersection of design, engineering, product, and strategy. You will not be handed a checklist of tools or patterns. You are expected to bring strong intuition, structured thinking, and the ability to make trade-offs in real environments. The ADL influences what gets built, how it behaves, and why it is worth building. The role needs depth in agentic system design and breadth across disciplines, with a bias toward outcomes over theory.

Responsibilities:

Design agentic systems that work in practice

• Map the current state of the workflow, then define how the agentic system should behave in it: decision loops, orchestration patterns, human-in-the-loop interactions.
• Design the interaction patterns that decide whether the thing is trusted: delegation, critique, escalation, and human override.
• Translate abstract agentic concepts into clear, implementable system and interaction designs engineering can build from.
• Evaluate designs on reliability, usability, scalability, and operational impact, before they are built rather than after.

Set the autonomy boundary, and own that decision

• Determine the right level of human involvement and agent autonomy based on risk, control, trust, and the consequences of failure in that specific workflow.
• Make informed trade-offs between autonomy, control, and complexity, and record the reasoning so it can be challenged later.
• Help teams decide when an agentic approach is appropriate and when it is not, including saying it is not.

Drive outcome-oriented design decisions

• Start from the purpose of the workflow and challenge inherited steps, handoffs, and controls, so the future state removes process debt instead of digitizing it.
• Ground the design in real operating conditions: user behavior, policies, dependencies, exception paths, edge cases.
• Prioritize scope, speed, and quality to protect delivery.

Design for trust and adoption

• Design so people can understand the system, trust it, and absorb it into daily work without new friction.
• Make sure the design reflects how the system will be used in practice, not only how it works in theory.
• Plan what changes in a user's day, what guardrails they need, and how exceptions are handled.

Partner across disciplines

• Work closely with engineers, architects, client leaders, and strategy teams.
• Act as connective tissue between concept, implementation, and adoption.
• Influence decisions through clarity of thought, not authority.

Establish reusable patterns

• Codify learnings into design patterns, frameworks, and guidance that other teams can reuse.
• Balance standardization with the flexibility different use cases need.
• Refine patterns based on field feedback and production behavior.

Requirements:

Primary skills

• Agentic system and interaction design
• Decision-loop and orchestration pattern design
• Human-in-the-loop, escalation, and override mechanisms
• Setting and defending autonomy and control boundaries
• Translating user workflows into system behavior
• Building workflows with low-code and no-code tools
• Background in product design, systems design, or architecture
• Cross-functional leadership and influence
• Structured reasoning and clear communication

Additional skills (nice to have)

• Exposure to AI-enabled or automation-heavy workflows
• Experience codifying patterns, frameworks, or playbooks
• Familiarity with usability testing and adoption feedback loops
• Reading enough of an evaluation result to know whether a design assumption held
• Experience working in startup or innovation lab environments
