About the opportunity

The School of Mathematics and Statistics is currently seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Spatial Omics and Statistical Data Science to join an ARC-funded Discovery Project developing statistical and computational methods for the analysis of emerging spatial omics technologies. Working within the Sydney Precision Data Science Centre, they will help develop open-source tools that improve our understanding of spatial organisation within complex tissues.

The successful applicant will be jointly supervised by A/Prof Ellis Patrick and Dr Shila Ghazanfar and based within the Sydney Precision Data Science Centre. They will play a key role in shaping the project's methodological direction and contribute to a collaborative research program spanning statistics, bioinformatics and applied biology.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • develop statistical and computational methods for analysing spatial omics data

  • work with interdisciplinary collaborators to apply methods to real biological data and interpret results

  • contribute to the supervision and mentoring of PhD and Honours students within the group

  • prepare high-quality publications and present research findings at national and international conferences

  • contribute to open-source software development and documentation to support uptake of the methods.

About you

  • a PhD in statistics, biostatistics, data science, computer science, bioinformatics or a closely related discipline

  • strong programming skills in R or Python

  • experience developing or applying methods to complex or large-scale datasets

  • ability to work both independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary research team

  • strong written and verbal communication skills.

Applicants who demonstrate the following will be highly regarded:

  • experience analysing spatial omics data

  • familiarity with spatial data analysis or statistical modelling

  • experience with research software development (e.g. R packages, reproducible workflows).
