The successful candidate will undertake and coordinate roadway and civil infrastructure design, guide junior technical staff, and work closely with project managers and multidisciplinary teams to deliver accurate, coordinated and timely project submissions.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and undertake functional, preliminary and detailed design for roadway reconstruction, rehabilitation and improvement projects, including alignments, profiles, cross-sections, intersections, grading, drainage and active transportation facilities.
  • Prepare, coordinate and review engineering design calculations, CAD models, drawings, design criteria, quantities, cost estimates, technical memoranda, specifications and tender documents.
  • Support the design and integration of stormwater management, storm and sanitary sewers, watermains, culverts, roadside drainage and other utilities associated with roadway projects.
  • Use and coordinate design deliverables across MicroStation, InRoads/OpenRoads Designer, AutoCAD and Civil 3D; review existing survey, terrain, references and model interfaces for accuracy and consistency.
  • Provide day-to-day technical direction and review work prepared by junior engineers, technologists and designers; support quality assurance/quality control, interdisciplinary reviews and resolution of design comments.
  • Coordinate technical inputs with internal disciplines, subconsultants, municipalities, utility owners and approving agencies; assist with permit and approval submissions and responses to review comments.
  • Support project managers with task planning, progress tracking, design schedules, deliverable coordination, scope changes and preparation of proposal technical inputs as required.
  • Apply relevant Ontario municipal and provincial standards, including applicable TAC, MTO, OPS and local agency requirements, while identifying technical risks, conflicts and constructability considerations.
  • Participate in site reviews, field investigations and construction-phase technical support, including review of RFIs and shop drawings, as required.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum five years of relevant civil/transportation engineering experience, preferably on roadway and highway design projects in Ontario.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in good standing with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).
  • Sound roadway geometric design judgement, with the ability to develop practical design options and resolve interface issues across roadworks, grading, drainage and municipal servicing.
  • Strong technical drafting/modelling literacy and ability to independently produce and check coordinated designs and deliverables.
  • Ability to organize technical work, prioritize competing deadlines, and communicate emerging design risks or required decisions to project leadership.
  • Clear written and verbal communication, collaborative coordination skills, and willingness to mentor developing staff.
  • Commitment to technical quality, professional accountability, integrity and continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrated experience in roadway geometry, grading and drainage, with familiarity with stormwater management and municipal watermain/sanitary/storm sewer design.
  • Working proficiency in MicroStation and InRoads/OpenRoads Designer, and AutoCAD/Civil 3D; direct project experience in one or more platforms and ability to coordinate across both Bentley and Autodesk environments.
  • Familiarity with Ontario municipal and provincial roadway design standards, specifications, design submissions and approvals processes.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint).
  • Experience providing technical guidance to junior staff and supporting construction-phase design inquiries is an asset.
  • Valid Ontario Class G driver’s license and ability to attend project sites as required is an asset.
