Upwork is an American freelance marketplace formed in 2015 from the merger of Elance and oDesk, and it connects businesses with independent professionals in software development, design, writing, marketing and increasingly artificial intelligence work. Its revenue comes from taking a percentage of what clients pay freelancers, which means it has spent years balancing take rate against the incentive for established pairs to leave the platform and transact directly. Headquartered in San Francisco and listed on Nasdaq, it has been positioning itself around higher-value professional work rather than competing at the commodity end of the market.

An enterprise client is seeking Academic Facilitators in Nigeria to provide academic and discipline-specific support to university students. Facilitators will complement existing faculty, advising, and student mentor resources by helping students navigate program-specific academic questions, access existing resources, and receive professional mentoring related to their field of study.

For this project, the selected candidate will:

  • Answer program- and major-specific questions and help students navigate available academic resources.
  • Become familiar with the curriculum for the assigned program to effectively respond to student questions.
  • Provide professional and discipline-related mentoring to students.
  • Supplement existing student resources while supporting the established learning and teaching model.
  • Receive and apply curriculum-related information and guidance from academic departments.
  • Maintain scheduled availability for students both in person and online.
  • Provide approximately 70% of student support synchronously and 30% asynchronously.
  • Coordinate with program stakeholders regarding student questions, curriculum information, and academic support needs.

Ideal candidates will have:

  • An earned doctorate degree in a discipline relevant to at least one of the following degree areas:

    - Applied Business Management

    - Applied Health

    - Professional Studies

    - Software Development

    - Communication

    - Information Technology

    - Family and Human Services

  • Professional and/or academic experience related to one or more of the degree areas above.
  • Experience supporting, mentoring, teaching, or advising university-level students.
  • Ability to quickly become familiar with program curriculum and provide accurate, helpful academic guidance.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to support students in both in-person and online environments.
  • Comfort working independently while collaborating with academic and student-support teams.
  • Ability to work effectively online using a laptop computer and cell phone.

This engagement is expected to require approximately 20 hours per week, Monday through Friday.

  • Approximately half of the weekly commitment will consist of scheduled, in-person availability in Lagos, Nigeria.
  • Remaining hours may be completed remotely or at the facility based on project and student-support needs.
  • Candidates must be located in, or able to reliably work on-site in, Lagos, Nigeria for the required portion of the engagement.
