Upwork is an American freelance marketplace formed in 2015 from the merger of Elance and oDesk, and it connects businesses with independent professionals in software development, design, writing, marketing and increasingly artificial intelligence work. Its revenue comes from taking a percentage of what clients pay freelancers, which means it has spent years balancing take rate against the incentive for established pairs to leave the platform and transact directly. Headquartered in San Francisco and listed on Nasdaq, it has been positioning itself around higher-value professional work rather than competing at the commodity end of the market.

An enterprise client is seeking US-based freelance contributors to support an AI research initiative focused on first-person video data collection. The project involves recording everyday household activities from a first-person perspective using an eligible smartphone secured in a head-mounted phone strap and the client’s Minute Data mobile application. Contributors will independently complete selected household tasks in their own homes, following detailed recording, privacy, and quality guidelines to ensure accurate and usable video data. The organization is looking for reliable, detail-oriented individuals who are comfortable performing everyday household activities while standing and moving, have access to a suitable smartphone and reliable WiFi, and can consistently meet project quality requirements.

  • Record everyday household activities from a first-person perspective using an eligible smartphone secured in a head-mounted phone strap.
  • Select and complete household activities from a list of more than 70 available tasks within the Minute Data mobile application.
  • Perform a variety of household activities, including laundry, tidying rooms, organizing wardrobes, cleaning bathrooms and garages, washing dishes, loading dishwashers, setting tables, gardening, handling groceries, taking out trash, walking dogs, and assembling furniture.
  • Complete recordings while standing or moving, as seated recordings are not accepted.
  • Choose preferred activities based on personal availability and task preferences, with no requirement to complete every available activity type.
  • Record individual activities ranging from approximately two to 30 minutes, depending on the task requirements.
  • Follow all client-provided recording instructions, privacy requirements, environmental standards, and video quality guidelines.
  • Ensure that children and other individuals are not captured in submitted recordings.
  • Upload completed video recordings through the Minute Data mobile application using a reliable WiFi connection.
  • Review quality feedback provided by the client and re-record activities when submitted footage does not meet project requirements.
  • Initially submit approximately 30 to 60 minutes of footage to receive quality feedback before proceeding with the remainder of the recording commitment.
  • Maintain consistency and accuracy when completing repetitive household activities and following recording instructions.
  • Complete a minimum of 10 approved hours of video footage, with opportunities to continue contributing based on project availability and recording quality.
  • Ensure that submitted footage meets the client's quality standards, as only approved video hours qualify for compensation.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must currently reside in one of the following eligible US states: Alabama, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Hampshire, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Wisconsin, or Wyoming.

Must own an eligible smartphone that meets the project's technical requirements:

  • iPhone 13 or newer, excluding iPhone 16e and 17e.
  • Google Pixel 6 or newer.
  • Samsung Galaxy S21 or newer.
  • Huawei and Motorola devices are not accepted.
  • Must have full mobility in both hands and the ability to perform household activities while standing and moving.
  • Must have access to a suitable home environment where everyday household activities can be safely and appropriately recorded.
  • Must have reliable WiFi access to upload completed video footage through the Minute Data application.
  • Must be willing and able to install and use the client's Minute Data mobile application.
  • Must use a head-mounted phone strap for all recordings. Handheld and body-mounted recordings are not accepted.
  • Must be able to follow detailed recording instructions, privacy requirements, and project-specific quality guidelines.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to perform repetitive household activities accurately and consistently.
  • Ability to work independently, manage recording schedules, and complete assigned activities within project requirements.
  • Ability to review quality feedback, identify recording issues, and re-record footage when necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience with video data collection, mobile applications, or AI data contribution projects.
  • Familiarity with first-person video recording or wearable smartphone recording equipment.
  • Experience following structured recording instructions, privacy standards, and quality assurance procedures.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to complete a variety of household activities consistently.
  • Ability to produce clear, stable, and high-quality video recordings that meet specific project standards.
  • Willingness to complete a variety of household activities to support broader AI research data requirements.
