This position is based in San Antonio, TX.

What you'll do:

As a Infrastructure Engineer Intern you will have the opportunity to explore how large-scale technology environments are monitored, maintained, secured, and optimized to deliver reliable experiences for our members and employees. You'll contribute to meaningful projects that enhance operational efficiency, strengthen platform reliability, and support modernization efforts across the organization. Under direct supervision and with guidance from senior engineers and your mentor, your day will focus on supporting infrastructure operations. You'll attend team meetings and assist in analyzing potential threats or vulnerabilities across systems. You will learn about designing scalable infrastructure, implementing system changes, and automating service delivery and maintenance tasks. You may assist in building monitoring and tooling activities, and help troubleshoot production issues or system problems. You'll learn how to analyze outages to identify opportunities for improvement and experiment with new patterns and technologies. Your work will support USAA's technology strategy and may involve leveraging AI tools and automation.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Learn how to design scalable infrastructure and implement system changes.
• Assist in automating service delivery and maintenance tasks.
• Help build monitoring and tooling activities for infrastructure systems.
• Learn to independently resolve production issues through system problem-solving under guidance.
• Start to analyze outages to identify opportunities for improvement.
• Experiment with new infrastructure patterns and technologies.
• Contribute to projects aligned with USAA's Technology Strategy.
• Assist in developing and implementing innovative IT solutions, potentially using AI tools.
• Create and maintain documentation related to technical solutions.
• Gain exposure to risk and compliance procedures within IT operations.

What you need to have:

To qualify, you must be pursuing a degree from an accredited college or university, and plan to graduate after the final day of the internship. Most of our interns participate in the summer between their junior and senior years. Our 2027 internship will start on June 2nd, 2027 and last through August 6, 2027.

• Graduation date cannot be prior to August 6, 2027
• Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or master’s degree in computer science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
• Anticipated graduation date between September 2027 and May 2028.
• Foundational understanding of:

• • Java or object-oriented programming concepts
  • Data structures and algorithms
  • Software development fundamentals
  • SQL and database concepts
  • Problem-solving and analytical thinking
  • Basic scripting skills to solve technical problems and reduce manual effort
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated leadership through coursework, projects, student organizations, employment, or community involvement.

What sets you apart:

• Exposure to PowerShell, Python, Ansible, PowerShell, Infrastructure as code (IaC) network Automation or other scripting languages.
• Exposure to Arista/Cisco
• Familiarity with APIs and system integrations.
• Exposure to Azure or other cloud technologies.
• Understanding of IT service management concepts or ServiceNow.
• Experience with coursework, projects, labs, or hackathons involving technology solutions.
• Interest in automation, infrastructure operations, and cloud engineering.
• Hands-On Experience Beyond the Classroom
• Basic knowledge of Microsoft 365 technologies and collaboration tools.
• Graduation date between August 2027 and May 2028

Compensation range: The salary range for this position is: $28.50 - $35. Interns will receive an intern stipend to assist with expenses.

Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the hourly range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual hourly rate for this role may vary by location.
