Job Title: Evening Supervisor & Student Experience Specialist

FTE/Working Schedule: 1.0 FTE (40 hours/week)

Position Overview:

The Evening Supervisor & Student Experience Specialist cultivates an intuitive, welcoming, and patron-centered learning environment during peak hours by overseeing library evening/weekend operations, providing mentorship and leadership for student employees staffed during evening/weekend shifts, and participating in projects to evaluate and improve library space and patron engagement, including user research and stacks maintenance.

The Evening Supervisor & Student Experience Specialist also supports Access Services by processing evening and weekend course reserves requests.

Carleton College Library is a member of the Bridge Consortium, a collaboration with the St. Olaf Libraries. As a member, the Evening Supervisor and Student Experience Specialist engages with peers at both libraries on Bridge-related projects.

Working Schedule:

This position will work two rotating schedules, which align with Carleton College’s class and break schedule. During Fall, Winter, and Spring Terms the typical work hours for this position will be Saturday-Wednesday from 3pm-12am (2-11pm on Sa). While classes are not in session the schedule for this position will be Mo-Fri 8am-5pm. This person in this position may also be asked to flex their schedule four days at the end of each term to account for exams day library hours (5pm-2am on exams days).

Compensation:

The expected hourly rate for this position is $26.50.

Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities:

Evening Supervision and Operation s

  • Provide circulation services to library patrons including borrowing, renewal, and return of library materials and loanable technology

  • Serve as the sole professional staff member during evening and weekend shifts and communicate and triage issues that arise during shifts.

  • Supervise library closing to maintain a safe and secure environment when the building is closed.

  • Guide patrons in the use of library space and technology equipment (e.g., microfilm, printers, and scanners);

  • Maintain a welcoming, accessible, and responsive physical environment at the library’s service points and across the library building.

  • Lead and mentor student employees who staff evening and weekend times to ensure dependable, responsive, and patron-centered services, and contribute to student employee training.

  • Clarify and uphold library policies to promote fair and equitable use of library resources and spaces.

  • Assist in processing course reserves by responding to requests made during evenings and weekends.

  • Set-up and provide support for evening and weekend library events.

Student Experience

  • Design and conduct user research aimed at better understanding and improving student experience during weekends and evening hours.

  • Engage with students to gather input in building out our technology, wellness, and other library of things collections so they reflect student needs.

  • Survey the library space and environment to compile data, resolve queries, and note infrastructure or safety needs.

  • Assess potential friction points in using library space and accessing resources, and propose improvements to streamline the user experience.

  • Evaluate wayfinding and signage for gaps to improve accessibility and navigation.

Stacks Maintenance

  • Conduct regular stack inventory, shelf-reading audits, and missing item searches regularly to maintain shelf accuracy and findability of resources.

  • Participate in shifting projects to maximize shelf capacity and improve collection navigability.

  • Coordinate student employees work on stack maintenance tasks and projects.

  • Monitor collection health by identifying damaged items, high-use areas, and misshelved materials.

  • Contribute to the moving, shelving and processing of physical library items.

Education/Experience/Skills:

Required:

  • Four-year degree or equivalent experience working in a library setting

  • Excellent communication and public relations skills with a helpful service-oriented approach.

  • Flexibility, enthusiasm, and ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and staff, and the general public.

  • Technological proficiency with demonstrated aptitude for learning new software and systems.

  • Supervisory experience.

  • Ability to frequently lift 20 or more pounds.

  • Ability to use discretion and judgment in a variety of situations.

  • Ability to handle stress and emergency situations.

  • Must be dependable and attentive to detail and accuracy.

  • Flexibility, enthusiasm, and ability to work effectively with faculty, students, staff, and the general public.

  • Willingness to adapt to a rapidly changing environment and eagerness to learn new skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues at Carleton and at St. Olaf College.

Preferred:

  • Master of Library and Information Science degree from an ALA accredited program (completed or in progress)

  • Familiarity with principles and practices of academic library access services operations

  • Familiarity with Ex Libris Alma/Primo integrated library system, ILLiad Interlibrary Loan, Moodle and Leganto

Must have the ability to understand and follow written and oral work instructions, operations, safety procedures, and hazardous labels.
